| 338903 | 2005-03-28 22:48:00 | Hi, My win2k desktop has reverted back to the default desktop and start menus. All my shortcuts are gone and all the program folders in the start menu are gone... except for the basics you get with default settings. I've looked in the documents and settigns folders. my desktop appears to have been overwritten witht eh default. Does anyone know how to get my desktop back...or even how to rebuild it? thanks Peter |

| 338904 | 2005-03-28 22:58:00 | Hi Peter, Welcome to PressF1 Have a look under Profiles (under C:\Documents and Settings) and see if you can see your username. Then open up the desktop folder under your profile. If you can see all your desktop icons etc still, then this means you must be logging on as a different user. Not sure if this works on W2K, but if you right click on the start button then select Explore, windows explorer will open up at the user profile section of who you are logged in with currently. If it seems you are still logging on as yourself, then your profile might of been corrupted. |

| 338906 | 2005-03-29 09:06:00 | does any info in this thread (www.experts-exchange.com) help? (it should mostly apply to win 2000 too) check your hard drive for possible bad sectors with the manufacturers diagnostic tools. Try and recover data with the tools talked about in that thread I linked too. Then try and run scandisk and/or chkdisk. Usually most profiles get lost only when using roaming ones. Check your event logs for possible clues as to what went wrong too. |
