339662 2005-03-30 10:37:00 I have Win98 coexisting on a dual boot drive with WinXP.

Win98 occupies Drive C, with XP on D.

Win 98 has become corrupted and I need to reinstall.

In short is it straightforward to format the C partition and reinstall Win98 without risking the WinXP installation on D.

339663 2005-03-30 10:40:00 Should be fine .

Not sure if XP would recognise it as a new installation or whether that would cause any problems . It's usual in Windows dual boot situations to install the oldest OS first .

Of course, back up important data before attempting anything .

339664 2005-03-30 11:14:00 Thanks Murray P.

My understanding is likewise, that the older OS should be installed first. Wish to avoid having to reload WinXP or the situation where I cannot boot WinXP.

339665 2005-03-30 11:33:00 If XP gets grumpy you might need to edit boot.ini, can't think of why it would though....., maybe if 2 instances of win98 ends up in there. Murray P (44)
339666 2005-03-30 12:04:00 A Win9x reinstall will wipe the master boot record (MBR) so you will need to enter the XP recovery console to reinstall the MBR (fixmbr ? from memory). Otherwise there will be no sign of XP once 98 has been reinstalled. johnd (85)
339667 2005-03-30 12:18:00 Oops! Sorry was going to check, never kept win98 that long after loading W2k .

OK, that's no biggy unless NTLDR gets into the picture as well . Have you run into that problem with 98 and XP/NT John? My only experience with that one is through triple booting Linux and W2k .

Have you tried repairing the corrupted win98 files through the System File Checker?

perhaps, if you want to avoid repairing the MBR via the recovery console (boot to XP CD, choose R for repair), you could install a boot loader like XOL ( . arnes . si/~fkomar/xosl . org/" target="_blank">www2 . arnes . si) or OSL (http://www . osloader . com/) . Could be more trouble than it's worth though for a (so called) simple MS with MS OS dual boot .

Can't quite remember if I have actually achieved this - but I am pretty sure it will work. Alternatively I have done the XOSL boot loader with 2 copies of Win2k, Win98 and Redhat Linux for a classroom situation.
