339561 2005-03-30 02:32:00 Currently researching which motherboard I should get for my next PC .

One motherboard lists the number of IDE headers as 2 x ATA-100, 6 x SATA compared to another which has 4 x ATA-133, 4 x SATA IDE headers .

I am rather confused by this . For the first motherboard are you only able to attach, for example, one non-SATA hard drive and one DVD (or CD_RW) drive??

If so, it won't be much good if I can't use my two non-SATA hard drives plus a DVD burner on it . :(

2 x ATA - 100 . I would say would be 2 IDE connections, for (Primary/Secondary) .

So 2 IDE devices can go on each (as master and slave) . Most motherboards, these days let u hook up 2 hdd's and 2 ide devices on the secondary / primary ide connection / Master /slave (cd/dvd) .

The 4x IDE and 4x SATA maybe motherboards that support RAID . It also depends on what OS u use, if u get SATA . 2k and XP, support SATA natively .

Other OS's may not be so easy to install onto a SATA . Could be wrong, as I've never tried installing an OS other than 2k, or XP on a SATA .

BUT if the BIOS supports other operating systems (like 98 etc), for SATA it'll most probably work .

339563 2005-03-30 03:03:00 ATA headers usually accept master/slave devices. There are some MBs where the number of drives that can be used at the same time is limited, eg use a SATA port and lose an ATA device. Picking a board that looks interesting and downloading the manual sometimes gets closer to the truth than the specs sheet. PaulD (232)
339564 2005-03-30 03:17:00 The first board could have 4 IDE devices and supposedly 6 sATA ones.
But I bet the 6 sATA is only possible using RAID rather than 56 individual sATA drives. May be wrong - what MB is it?

339565 2005-03-30 04:56:00 Thanks guys .

I downloaded a couple of manuals as Paul suggested and found that the first motherboard, with 2 x ATA-100 headers, does support two IDE devices on each as primary and secondary like my current motherboard does so that's OK .
