2005-03-29 18:31:00 | this am, turned on pc, firefox firewall was suddenly on my pc + and all shortcuts on desktop look like a windows page and when i look in windows explorer all i see are drives listed, none of my programs, same in system info tools. Cant open any ms programs. Can open avg, adware,+ spybot. No problems. Cant run sfc, get an error 267. When windows starts, get message on black screen AVG7CORE.VXD + AVG7RS.VXD cant be found. Then windows informed me it was restoring a previous backup. But it didnt change any of the problems listed here. My computer will open, but not briefcase or documents. I uninstalled the firefox. Since windows is running, and pc does start, have i somehow just lost a file? Please help. win98se

2005-03-29 18:53:00 | you could try restoring the registry. To restore the registry go to DOS (not via a windows box use shutdown/ restart in msdos mode). Type in Scandisk /restore at the DOS prompt. You will them be shown 5 backups (default) with the corresponding dates. Choose the latest backup that was before the problem and restore to it.

2005-03-29 19:40:00 | tried scandisk/restore in dos, ...nothing happened. | jonlinsmith (7340) | |
2005-03-30 04:42:00 | It should be scandisk(space)/restore If no-one has any other suggestions, it might pay to try a repair installation, or back up your files and do a format and clean install.

2005-03-30 13:31:00 | Try running this program Here (www.answersthatwork.com) and if it refuses to recognise the exe file type, go start-run and enter.. ASSOC.EXE=EXEFILE | pheonix (36) | |
2005-03-30 15:45:00 | I ended up reformatting and reinstalling from my husbands win98 disk. I never had one. Pc came with win98 installed. Im up and running, but i have no sounds or briefcase or backup. I had backed up the day before this all happened, and had coppied it to a floppy, . I know these things should be able to install from his disk, but they wont for some reason on mine. We have had this problem before, when i needed a file, i would try from his cd, and it never worked(like it doesnt read), and we had to manually go look in his ,instead, and make a copy on a floppy to install on mine.

2005-03-30 18:23:00 | Anyone know what started all these problems , in my original post? Virus? and how did firefox get installed ? Im the only person who uses this pc. And if i restore backup, from the floppy, might it put the problem back on my pc? Maybe i shouldn't, but i lost sooooo much.

2005-03-30 18:39:00 | cant imagine how you will restore much of a backup off a 1.4mb floppy........and what the hell is 'firefox firewall'......theres no such thing that I know of...... | drcspy (146) | |
2005-03-30 22:00:00 | Anyone know what started all these problems , in my original post? Virus? and how did firefox get installed ? Im the only person who uses this pc.As mentioned, there isn't anything called Firefox Firewall, but there is the Mozilla Firefox web browser. You have to deliberately download and install this application in order to get it. What sort of thing were you seeing that had Firefox Firewall on it? If you could be more descriptive that could help us work out what happened in the first place. There has been alot of problems recently with Win98 machines and a Microsoft update that has been released (update KB891711), which causes problems but normally Blue Screen error messages. I see from your original error message that your antivirus program AVG couldn't be found on startup - this can indicate the work of a virus/worm or trojan. And if i restore backup, from the floppy, might it put the problem back on my pc? Maybe i shouldn't, but i lost sooooo much.If you have installed AVG again and fully update it, then scanning the floppy first will ensure you don't have any viruses on it. This backup is just all your personal data files? You might to consider installing a firewall as well for further protection. ZoneAlarm, Agnitum Outpost and Keiro all have free versions of their firewalls.
