338958 2005-03-29 02:02:00 I've gotten myself Knoppix on a CD and now I want to run it from the CD.
The instructions say to change the order of boot from HD to CD in the BIOS, but how do I do that?
I looked for boot.ini, but I don't seem to have one. And I don't appear to have bootcfg either. :( Or am I on the wrong track?

338959 2005-03-29 02:11:00 You're on the wrong track, the BIOS is onboard the mobo, not on the hdd.

To get into the BIOS u press the Delete key, or it maybe F1, or F2 / F10.
as soon as u boot the system up.

Not all systems are the same. Then u change the bootdisk in BIOS to cd, then save the settings then reboot.

Just remember to change it back, to the hard drive after, (and take the cd out of the cdrom), and then save the settings again. To boot from the hard drive.

338960 2005-03-29 02:12:00 You just need to get into your BIOS to do this. When the computer first boots up you will see a quick message on the bottom say "Push <whateverkey> to enter SETUP", this is often the DEL key. Just starting tapping that key until you get into the CMOS/BIOS screen. Using arrows to navigate, look for the boot order setting (this location will vary according to your BIOS version). You need to change the boot order to:

first device: floppy
second device: CD-ROM
third device: hard drive

Save the changes and escape from the setup utilty. Before the machine boots, put in your Knoppix CD. You will often see a message about hitting enter to boot off the CD. Enjoy Knoppix. :)

338961 2005-03-29 02:20:00 Thanks for the info Speedy and Jen.
I'm about to do it.
Speedy says I need to change the order back afterwards.
Is that necessary?

338962 2005-03-29 02:27:00 No, it isn't necessary as long as you have put the boot order how I have suggested it.

What happens is the machine when booting will look for a floppy disk to boot from, if none found it will then look for a bootable CD (not standard CD's) and if none found, it will then look at the hard drive to boot off (which is normal practice). If you have hard drive listed as first boot order, then it will always find that first and never go looking for a CD to boot off.

338963 2005-03-29 02:36:00 Here I am in Knoppix.
I tried Linux before, using RedHat and never could get the hang of it.
Knoppix looks and feels pretty familiar.
I can even access my PC files and edit them.
Thanks again for the help.

338964 2005-03-29 02:41:00 Good to see you got it booted OK. Knoppix isn't the friendliest looking distro as it is often geared up for system rescue's and trouble-shooting which is why there are so many technical looking tools available on it. Certainly good for a play and looksie. SuSE also does a live CD which you might like to try out, as it is geared to the home user desktop computer. :) Jen (38)
338965 2005-03-29 02:55:00 It's probably a good idea to put the floppy last in the BIOS boot list. It takes a little bit of time to test the floppy drive, and there are very few OSs which can be booted from a floppy now anyway. ;) The old reason for not having floppy boot first was the existence of floppy borne viruses. Jen Jen Jen, Mepis live CD (http://www.mepis.org/), ok ;)

It's a nice friendly wee desktop distro with the usual stuff you'll need plus an optional 2nd CD for installing more app's off (you won't need it inititially at least) and an easy hard drive install option if you find you like it. Like Knoppix it's Debian based, in fact I think it uses some of the Knoppix hardware detection.
