340360 2005-04-01 14:08:00 I've just been setting up my new DFI 875B motherboard and 3.2E Prescott processor and been through about 3 reinstalls of Windows to see if I could fix it. :(

What happens is the system locks up like you can't do anything in the application, it stops responding. Happens for like 10secs then resumes to normal. I noticed it when surfing with Firefox. You would click on a button or menu and it would freeze up. Or scroll down the page using the mouse and lock up also. Does it in Internet Explorer as well, and sometimes during desktop use.

There was some text in the start of the manual:

Install sequence:
1. Install audio drivers
2. Install Intel Chipset Software Install Utility
3. Install the other drivers and utilities.

Make sure to follow this sequence. Doing otherwise will slow down the boot up time and affect the performance of the system.

First install of Windows I did LAN driver, rebooted, then Intel Chipset drivers and the performance was pretty bad. This was before I read those rules. Then I managed to get the latest BIOS from the site and upraded that, no change.

Then I discovered the 'rules' and nuked the XP partition and started again. This time I installed the Intel Chipset drivers straight away (off CD) and then rebooted then the other drivers like LAN and Ati 4.12s. I didn't do the Audio drivers because I have a sound card.

So anyway it is still doing it, freezing up and stuff. Everything is at stock speed.

Another thing in the BIOS when changing settings, you go F10 or save and Exit and it will prompt you with a Y to confirm. You hit enter to confirm and it does nothing. Just sits there no matter how many times you hit enter. You can't escape either. So I ctrl+alt+del to reboot and sure enough the settings I changed are showing up when I went back into the BIOS. But why didn't it reboot on exit?

Help? :(

340361 2005-04-01 16:03:00 Not sure why ctrl Alt del should reboot in BIOS, doesn't look right to me . Have you tried typing "y" then Enter .

Follow the instructions to the letter, install your motherboard drivers then your sound card, once everything is up and running try disabling your onboard audio in BIOS (it may not like the 2 running together) . Does this board have onboard video as well? Do you need to disable it in BIOS if you install a video card? Whatever, it doesn't seem right for a modern motherboard .

RAM, how many sticks? Try swapping slots, leave one stick out .

Hard drives, how many, what are the jumpers set to, RAID, hardware or software?

That's all I can think of at the mo, it's late, I've been out ;)

340362 2005-04-01 16:25:00 Thanks for the late night response Murray. :)

Memory is 2x512MB in dual channel, 400Mhz @ 2-2-2-6

The main gear video card, RAM, PSU, everything else was working perfectly before I switched them over to this system. The systems were nearly identical apart from the socket and motherboard/chipset. Before I was running an Asus P5P800 (LGA775, 865PE chipset) and 3.2Ghz LGA775 P4. Now I'm running the same gear but with a new DFI 875B (socket 478, 875P chipset) and a brand new 3.2E P4. I did a lateral upgrade as it will be cheaper to get my VapoChill PE running on s478. ;)

Yep I did try that. ;) Still a lockup. Strangely you can go in and exit without saving changes and that will work.

Hard drives, how many, what are the jumpers set to, RAID, hardware or software?
3 hard drives. 2 PATA drives set to cable select I think, 1 SATA. I have disabled RAID in the BIOS like the manual says to do if you are not using it.

I will try this tomorrow. Start your bets on how many Windows installs I end up doing. ;)

Metla says to try setting it up outside the case to rule out shorting from the case. I have loosened the screws which didn't do anything.

340363 2005-04-01 20:57:00 Put the hdds on Master/slave on the jumpers and the BIOS . It might make a difference .

Also, has this mobo got a 4 pin atx connector on the mobo? If so, is the connection from the power supply connected to this?

Thats usually the best way.... Just connect the graphics, RAM, keyboard, and one of the harddrives, and start from there

340365 2005-04-02 00:55:00 take one stick out and try again, you may have a dodgie stick of ram.... Prescott (11)

Ok I will try that soon.

Yep that's been plugged in from the beginning.

340367 2005-04-02 01:50:00 I ran Prime 95 overnight with 2 instances. 6.5hrs no errors on blend test and smallFFT test then I stopped it. That would seem to indicate the CPU and RAM might be fine. E|im (87)
340368 2005-04-02 02:04:00 is sp2 installed? Prescott (11)
340369 2005-04-02 03:14:00 Yes XP Pro SP2 slipstream CD. Worked fine on the P5P800. E|im (87)
