340101 2005-04-01 00:30:00 I have finally decided to move all my software applications (programs) onto a seperate partition from my O/S to save time whenever I re-format my PC.
I want to be able to only have to reinstall Windows and its associated service packs and updates whenever my drive gets too clogged with crap and I decide to have my annual clean up by reformatting!
The drive letter for my O/S partition is C and D for my applications partition. My approach has been to:
1: Uninstall the program from the O/S partition
2: Reinstall on the applications partition in a manually created "Programs" folder
My specific questions/concerns are:
1: When I eventually reformat and reinstall Windows XP Home on the O/S partition, will the applications (programs) on the D drive automatically work okay (am presuming they will)??
2: The hardware drivers still need to be installed to the O/S (C) partition??
3: This is the best way to handle this change bar re-formatting the O/S partition now (with applications still on it) and then reinsatlling both the O/S and the program applications to their new respective partitions as outlined above (which I really can't be bothered with right now!)?

Any comments and suggestions most welcome!!!

Thanks

Paul (A.K.A C. Ali)

340102 2005-04-01 00:34:00 hell no,Programs on a seperate partition won't work after your format and reload the OS, they need the registry entires in order to run. Metla (12)
340103 2005-04-01 00:36:00 Any programs that you install will usually write information to the registry i.e c drive, even if you install that information to the d drive. If you then do a clean install of your os onto the c drive that will install the registry again but will not contain the registry entries that your programs made. As a result they wont work. What I do is keep all my data on a seperate partition as well as a ghost image with all my standard apps. That way I can reimage and keep all the data I use most often. Hope this helps.

340104 2005-04-01 01:33:00 Okay thanks, I understand your explanation re: the registry which then leads me to wonder: "why do people bother having a seperate partition at all for the programs from the O/S???

Cheers

340105 2005-04-01 01:37:00 Partition for OS and programs and partition for files.

Then once you have your OS/programs setup get an imaging program and create an image.

340106 2005-04-01 01:43:00 itds acctually not that bad.

a lot of games will work fine, when you run them they install the reg keys (normally just cd key info). you just need to make new shortcuts to the desktop etc.

other progs you simply just "install over the top" and they will pickup from where they left off ie you don't lose any data.

only ones that have to be installed to c drive is drivers, major apps that runn at startup (firewalls, AV etc) and any apps that intergrate with the OS which include the likes of MS office (this is due to the fact you can't reinstall over the top of them).

other things is you just change location, ie my documents, after the reinstall.

Rubbish. I did it the other week, the icons were lost, I just re-created them and they all work fine. Most programs don't need junk in the registry.

I would love to see you install a program like MS Office to a different drive and then clean install OS and get it to work by recreating an icon. I dont think so Tim.
