340370 2005-04-02 04:40:00 Well I just plugged in the one hard drive (SATA Raptor) and did a reinstall of XP. Even after a new install it was hanging in programs. Then I followed the driver install instructions to the letter. Installed the audio drivers, but they didn't finish installing properly so I cancelled them at 94% where it was hanging. Then I installed new chipset drivers from the DFI site. Back to applications hanging.

Seems to be mainly Firefox and Thunderbird hanging. Internet Explorer doesn't seem to do it and other applications I think are ok. General performance seems to be sluggish though. I have reinstalled those quite a few times and used older versions which used to work fine, still hangs.

I'm now about to set it up on the desk with minimal components. That'll be a bit of work. :(

340371 2005-04-02 06:51:00 isnt there somesort of patch for prescott cpu's that you will need when you have sp2?
it could be this (www.microsoft.com) . i think that is the patch, it could be worth a try....

Not that I know of. This board (Rev B) is supposed to support Prescotts out of the box. SP2 is definitely adequate as I used that on the P5P800.

Edit: I'll try that patch now.

I have set the motherboard out on the table on an antistatic mat amd tried various components. Still making applications stop responding. It is particularly bad with Firefox and Thunderbird but it happens in other applications as well. Generally the system is performing pretty poorly.

I think this motherboard is borked, what do you think? Might ask for a forward replacement.

340373 2005-04-02 07:19:00 could try to clear the cmos, maybe something there but i doubt it, bring it back, demand for a new mobo :) Prescott (11)
340374 2005-04-02 07:25:00 If u DO have a Prescott at the mo with SP2, this may help.

340375 2005-04-02 07:35:00 Hmm that patch isn't doing too bad. Certainly stopping the frequency of the hangs. :) I'm still getting a few hangs though. Mine is an E0 stepping.

Might be too soon to tell. I'll give it a day or so. Even if I got a new motherboard do you think that would be any better?

340376 2005-04-02 08:05:00 I think this prescott patch has to be installed before u install SP2, to make it work properly .

I would say, even if u get another mobo, and if u use the same CPU, you may have to install this patch again anyway .

If it keeps on freezing up, I would remove SP2, then reinstall this prescott patch, then reinstall SP2 again .

340377 2005-04-02 08:27:00 Argh so you think I have to install XP, then the patch, then SP2? Pretty clumsy aye. I wonder if I can slipstream the fix into SP2 using nLite. I may as well give it a go.

Its weird because I haven't heard of this problem before with this board/CPU type.

Also with this motherboard there is the problem with the BIOS not saving configuration properly and exiting like it should. I know that's not normal and could indicate bigger problems.

Thats it . Install XP the patch / SP2 . Umm maybe the CMOS battery is flat??

I had the same kind of prob on this . Altho it saved the BIOS settings, the time was lagging like 20 mins - 30 mins every few days .

I took the other CMOS battery out of another mobo, that isnt in use atm .

And so far so good . The time seems to be OK for now . Its not the mobo thats the prob, its the CPU, since its a Prescott, and you're using XP and SP2 . And its a known issue with Prescotts and XP / SP2 .

340379 2005-04-02 14:25:00 I reintalled with standard XP Pro and installed patch and chipset drivers. Still bad. Then I gave up and put my P5P800 and 3.2 LGA775 back in. Ahh stability again with Firefox. :)

After some searching the problem seems to be with E0 CPUs as well with quite a few people describing the same problem. Applications not responding etc.
