340646 2005-04-02 06:21:00 I have had so many problems, some unrelated that I have to start from scratch.
The first question----The Dynalink Router ADSL light flashes constantly but not with data transfer. My problem is a PC shop tested it and said it was alright but if I use my old USB ADSL modem instead the light comes on,stays on and it works ok. PC networking says it is connected and timing but nothing is getting through. I think that light should stay on [independant power supply] even if the PC is off.

340647 2005-04-02 08:41:00 Help anyone----Does any external router ADSL light stay on constantly (if working) even if PC is switched off? Nalla (6795)
340648 2005-04-02 08:41:00 Which light? Power, LAN, ADSL?
Is it connected via LAN cable or USB?
Are you able to ping the router?
Are your network settings correct?
Really need more info than you have provided.........

340649 2005-04-02 09:05:00 I tried to keep it simple but this is a roughly what happened. 33K volts came down the telephone line (not a typo), the PC was not connected at the time but modem was. So that seems simple but MB shuts down 12 hours later, so that seems obvious but although I paid a reasonably large amount of money for a GIG GA-K8NSNXP 10 months ago, this is the 3rd replacement MB. Computer shop said no evidence of burning so not power strike.
The light I am talking about is the ADSL light on the router.
I wanted to start at the beginning as I have questions about a something On the boot-up screen saying --CPU 200 Megahertz--that was not there before.
Anyway one thing at a time

340650 2005-04-02 09:34:00 This the LAN light and not the DSL light that is flashing? But everything looks normal if you use the USB option of your modem? You don't need to be connected to the internet or even have the computer turned on to still get power spike damage. Is your ethernet onboard or a PCI NIC card?

You might be best to start a separate thread about the message on bootup problem. :)

340651 2005-04-02 11:28:00 Looks to me from experience that u could perhaps look at the following points.
A 33Kv is what is called a major "hit".
Are u a rural customer (ie supplied service by Electronic meens?) as this may have had a strike and reset, but are still problems and for ADSL give "errors".
Incoming line at u house:- is it a newish install as it could have had a "strike" on the carbon protectors if fitted.A strike could also damage any or all of the ADSL separation filters, including theADSL jack and use a BTto RJ45 plug to directly connect the ADSL Modem. Remove all and the associated gear and see if the ADSL modem polls and connects.
Get the Phone Co to do a full test your line if the above still is not satisfactory. Remember to always mention that you had a 33Kv feeder on your phone line.
This should assist, if not e-mail me and will work some further tests with you.

340652 2005-04-02 14:59:00 Help anyone----Does any external router ADSL light stay on constantly (if working) even if PC is switched off?

My router while connected has a Data (WAN) LED that stays on solid. However it also has a light that flashes when the connection is established and is the only time it is on. The Data LED flashes while it is trying to make a connection.

It has 4 speed LED's that should how fast data is coming down but only really gets off the first one above 2Mb/sec.

The other 4 LED's flash/stay steady depending on network activity on the LAN side as they are the LAN connections.

340654 2005-04-02 22:16:00 Thank-you Don.
It looks to me as if computer company did not test the router and did a visual burn check
only which is a problem because some phones were hit and some not (cables melted first before it got to them).
Will follow up on advice. Telecom have laid a temp. cable which will support ADSL.
Strike melted 4Km,s of underground cable
