| 340611 | 2005-04-02 05:53:00 | Having replaced my partners harddrive, and installing Windows 98 first edition (at her request) I keep getting a 'PCI communications device found' notice on startup. Now I know this is a new device being picked up, and I know its looking for a driver, but I don't know where to find the driver for it, or what a PCI communications device is (I am assuming it is the integrated sound card). The computer is an Acer desktop with Acer mobo, P3 Celeron, the only PCI devices are a LAN card and the modem (which was another story in itself, but all sweet now). |

| 340613 | 2005-04-02 06:40:00 | Already did that sorry, it gave me a ESS sound card, so off I went to drivers.com (was either driverguide, or windrivers, can't remember which one) and downloaded it, only to have the computer do its usual 'I found a driver' reboot. When it had rebooted, I checked device manager, and there was the big yellow ! there to meet me still. Any other ideas? |

| 340614 | 2005-04-02 06:49:00 | try this delete the device with yellow exclaimation mark then click on the refresh button down the bottom of that window, it will redetect devices then hopefully reinstall the correct device, sometimes even after installing the correct driver 98 will insist on using the old drivers. failing that read manuals or visit the acer web site and see if theres drivers or motherboard specs there. I say motherboard because laptops most often have the sound card intergrated into the motherboard chipset, also look for other updates for your OS and laptop model while you are there |

| 340616 | 2005-04-02 07:05:00 | I think its looking for a modem driver - PCI communication device. NOT a soundcard driver. I would open the case, and find out what the make/brand of the modem is. |

| 340620 | 2005-04-02 09:10:00 | Hmm, slight blue on my part... it was the modem it was looking for. I uninstalled the 'modem' and removed both that and the communications device... rebooted, got the communication device notice, and loaded the modem driver into it All sweet now :) Thank you I suppose we learn from making silly mistakes lol but then 98 is kinda new territory for me (however I shoulda clicked because of the 'PCI' in the message) DOH!! |
