340554 2005-04-02 02:26:00 We have a laptop HP Omnibook 510 which was going ok until the owner went overseas for 6 months and could not start the computer on return. When you switch on the fan starts and the blue HDD light comes on for a few seconds and then goes off. Nothing on the display. We went into the HP website and followed their instructions to insert a paper clip into the System off switch and then held the blue sleep switch. Same result. Another site told us to remove the HDD and the battery and try again. This time the HDD light stayed on. We have tried various combinations without success.

Any advice would be appreciated. The OS is Win XP, and there is a docking base with CD and Floppy drives and a mains power supply as well as a lithium battery

HAve you got it plugged into mains power?
Have you tried removing the battery and seeing if it boots up with it plugged in and without the battery?
Can you hear the HDD start up at all or nothing?

340556 2005-04-02 23:37:00 Have tried all of those. Removed the battery, the hard drive, floppy in and CD in. The blue light comes on for about 2 seconds and then goes out. The CD drive turns on if there is a CD in it and spins for some time. There are three lights on the front Green, Blue and Orange.
The green and orange lights are on, but the blue justs comes up for a brief time at startup.
When the Hard drive is removed the blue light stays on.

340557 2005-04-03 10:21:00 I think you're stuck with contacting a laptop repair place. I read a few similar problems in the HP forum and its hardware. A couple of people got theirs to boot for now in a way I certainly don't recommend and probably won't help its long term viability. pctek (84)
