340419 2005-04-01 17:12:00 Two years has passed since I purchased my old computer and it is time to look at upgrading to something newer. I am needing some advice on which direction to go in and. For the most part I use Auran Trains 2004 and MS Flight Simulator 2004. I do play the odd FPS but realy find the problem with my system with regards to simulators with regards the computer screen jerking with every redraw of a complex screen image.

CURRENT SYSTEM:
Intel P4 2.53
512 mb PC2100 RAM
GeForce Ti2400 128mb graphics card
Windows XP Home edition

PROPOSED SYSTEM:
AMD 3500+ 64 bit processor skt 939
1 Gig DDR400 RAM
Radwon 9600 Pro 256mb graphics card
Windows XP Home edition

I am a little out of date with regards to the latest or rather current hardware, id this system a big or marginal upgrade? That is to say:
1)is there much difference between the CPU's, graphics cards and memory? Will this boost the games I run significantly?

2)Should I consider utilizing a 16PCI graphics bus and move to a x300 video card, or would I just be better to spend $120 more and get a 9700 card for my needs.

Also I want to keep my existing hard drive, the person in the computer shop said they would be able to do this by undertaking the repair option and thus keeping the data and current programs while reconfigering it for the new hardware - is this a viable/possible?

Finally, if I just decide to purcahse another hardrive and install my current (original) Windows XP on the new system and I also able to keep it on the old computer too. It has only been installed once and that was two years ago on the current computer i have.

Many thanks for any light and advice you can provide... Shomenno

340420 2005-04-01 17:38:00 start by upgrading your ram from pc2100 to say pc3200 theres considerable difference..... drcspy (146)
340421 2005-04-01 18:04:00 If you have the bucks, you might want to upgrade your memory to more than 1GB. If you somehow able to get the 64-bit version of Xp, get it. Xp x-64 is able to utilise the 64 bit speed compare to Xp 32-bit version. Cheers and welcome :) Renmoo (66)
340422 2005-04-01 20:34:00 Change the motherboard (well you will anyway to go from Intel to AMD) but I'd get socket 939.

The graphics card - take a look at these benchmarks:

For PCI Express:
graphics.tomshardware.com

For AGP:
graphics.tomshardware.com

See where the R9600 comes? If you can afford it go higher.

340423 2005-04-01 22:57:00 I would have thought that processor would handle those games easily. You may only need to double your RAM and get a better graphics card to see a good improvement. What is your current motherboard? FoxyMX (5)
340424 2005-04-01 23:37:00 Ya, She aint cutting edge but that rig should still take all that in its stride, I would suggest a system tune-up before taking drastic action, how many programs do you have in startup?

and are you running a resource killing app like Nortons?
