2005-04-03 03:49:00 | You dont have to worry about third party boot loaders, XP will do it for you if you edit the boot.ini file. When it boots it will give you a choice XP or 98, you can set on as default OS to load if nothing is picked.

2005-04-03 09:54:00 | Thanks heaps for your excellent advice Guys, I now have Win XP on drive 0 and win 98SE on drive 1. at the moment I am selecting either drive thru the bios boot menu. Rob99 suggests that I edit my boot.ini file, what do I need to add to it? Cheers | stewart (7777) | |
2005-04-03 12:17:00 | robs idea will work but there is very big BUT make sure that.. BACK UP ALL VAULABLE DATA BEFORE DOING THIS back up your boot.ini before doing anything you can read the the xp disk with a 98 boot disk ie the xp file system is not ntfs you may need to copy back your backup boot.ini you know the syntax to use and how xp identifies disks and partions research will be needed here. lastly this method although a good idea may mean in the long run a reninstall of xp if anything goes wrong

2005-07-20 10:05:00 | Hi All Same problem as this thread. Have got two HDDs, both are running fine, one on 98 one on XP, if either is plugged in all is good, but if both are plugged in the start up stops with a black screen and flashing cursor. Tried Rob's Boot edit, but that gave me a boot error. Both drives are labelled C, but as different OS I didn't think was an issue. Do I need to set one as master and one as slave? Have tried with win98 as slave but still having the same flashing cursor. Start up/OS selection needs to be simple as the win98 disk is for the kids and games, leaving XP to run back ups and spare work PC. Any other ideas would be appreciated. Regards

2005-07-20 11:42:00 | XP disk as master 98 as slave. Or use cable select XP disk at the end and the 98 disk half way along the ribbon cable. What error did you get upon booting? Can you tap F8 while booting and select the drive you want to boot.
