341366 2005-04-04 04:57:00 Hi folks

I have been getting a bit jumpy about firewalls etc, and tested mine at www.grc.com

I run Sygate Personal Firewall Pro, and have my Dynalink RTA300 modem router firewall set to medium. If I set it to high, I can't get through to the Paradise email server, and if I try to set it to Advanced, premature senility sets in when confronted with the table of options...

The test at grc shows all ports are stealth except for one which is closed:
Port 554
Name: rtsp
Purpose: Real Time Stream Control Protocol

I presume this is the port that is used for connecting to the Paradise POP server.

Do you see any reason for concern at this situation (i.e. having that single port closed but responding to pings)?

Secondly, I note that the IP address assigned to me is visible to others. Is that a matter of concern? If so, how do you stop that happening?

Thanks for any advice.
John

An IP Address will always be visible to others otherwise you can not communicate with anything.

However, what you have reported above, indicates you are pretty secure.

Thanks for clarifying that for me. I did wonder whether that would be the case with RTSP.

And as far as the IP Address is concerned, thanks for that as well. I couldn't see how knowing your address could amount to a hill of beans unless you could actually get through a firewall to the computer behind, but still...

And that website is awesome. What an amazing treasure chest of downloads. Thanks again. :)
