341101 2005-04-03 06:39:00 OK, I was just browsing the internet a few minutes ago (going on sites I don't usually go on). I have a file-sharing program called Warez and I was rescanning my shared folder and all of a sudden it showed that I have no files at all in my library. I checked through windows explorer and I noticed that many other files and folders, not just from Warez, were gone. I am sure they were there just minutes before. I restarted my PC, hoping that would do something and I noticed that my AVG anti-virus software didnt run it's usual startup scan. When windows opened the prompt came up that says "updating windows system files" or something like that with the little beating drum icon. My desktop came up and most of the icons had turned to the generic windows EXE icons (the window with the little arrow in the bottom left corner). The Warez program still runs fine, except for all the the missing files, and most of my other programs are running fine as well but alot of files have been deleted for some reason. I had many many word documents from school and things like that that are now all gone. I ran my AVG antivirus program (which has up-to-date definitions) and it says I had no viruses and my ad-aware said I had just a few data-miners which i deleted. Also when I went into outlook express I was sent another one of those Welcome e-mails that are sent when you first install outlook express. In general, many many .EXE files and other iles and folders have been deleted but I do not see how so many files could have been deleted that quickly. Was this a virus?

P.S. I use norton partitioner adn so I have all my system files on C drive and all my other files on D drive. I appears that none of the files on C drive are missing. All the files that are missing were from D drive.

341102 2005-04-03 06:48:00 UPDATE: I checked my anti-virus program history and it turns out that it found a
"Trojan horse IRC/BackDoor.SdBot.126.ap" in a .pif file that was in D:ProgramFiles in my last virus scan. Could this be the problem? Is there any way of getting my files back? Why did this file or virus suddenly appear and do this now?

341104 2005-04-03 08:16:00 It takes a lot of will to read the long post of yours, Elrepho. If possible, could you specify the websites that you visited that causes you troubles? Have you try scanning your HDD with Anti-adware / spyware product as well? Cheers :) Renmoo (66)
341105 2005-04-03 08:26:00 Try running rest2514 (www.webattack.com) and see what it can recover off your D drive. pheonix (36)

341107 2005-04-03 08:37:00 if you used your pc longer than 5 min when they were deleted, you have a slim to none chance of recovering your files.

you dont mean WinMX do you? if you deleted the file from your shared folder, you have deleted it from your HDD, it maybe in the recycle bin

and your basicly asking us to recover illegally obtained files?

341108 2005-04-03 09:27:00 If you have any luck recovering your files then dump the Warez P2P it is a host for spyware anyway. If you still want to have a P2P client I suggest EMule it has no known issues regarding security, however what you actually download is another thing. Good Luck.

341109 2005-04-03 09:55:00 FUD. Warez p2p is not the absulute "OMG I"M GUNNA KEILL ALL JOOR JIGGAHURTZ AND TERAWATTS LOL !!!111" client. However, you should always have regular backups, an up to date virus scanner and preferebly an antispyware client that has realtime protection. Firewall essential also.

If the files are not in the recycle bin, good luck recovering. Follow suggestions above
