341440 2005-04-04 08:37:00 i have been using Sygate Firewall for a bit and have found it to be pretty good, my trial just ran out, and i am about to re-install it,
Your trial ran out?? Were you trialling the paid version?

I have been using the free version for a while now and find it pretty good. I mainly use it to keep control of apps trying to go off and do their thing on the internet rather than keeping things out since I am behind a NAT router but I would still recommend it.

341441 2005-04-04 08:47:00 The Windows XP firewall isn't that bad. It's not the best, but it does do the trick.

Of course you're asking for the best free firewall. Check out something like smoothwall or m0n0wall. Or set up your own preferred version of *nix.

XP firewall lets everything out . xpsp2 firewall is a bit better but i have never seen it ask to let a program through .
same goes for smoothwall etc .

whats the point of a firewall that lets everything through?

341443 2005-04-04 22:57:00 A poor firewall (Windows XP SP2) is better than no firewall . And with AntiSpyware Beta, Microsoft is at least making a start .

The free ones, ZoneAlarm, Sygate and Kerio, amongst others are better still . There are Pro versions of these as well, which usually add features you can get free as well, i . e . Anti-Virus, Spyware Blocking, Pop-UP Blocking, etc .

Commercial Ones, Norton, McAfee, PcCillin, may be even better, but check out the web for problems with these, before buying . (i . e . Norton Internet Security 2005 has had a few problems) . They also bundle their AntiVirus programs into them .

I prefer to use a variety of programs; Avast, ZoneAlarm, FireFox, Ad-Aware, Spybot, SpywareBlaster, ProcessGuard, i . e . not put all my eggs in one basket scenario .

very few free ones support ICS. at the moment i think sygate might still support it.

341446 2005-04-05 00:15:00 You may want to try AnalogX Proxy (www.analogx.com) and allow this to accept connections from the trusted network (your home network)

It may take a bit of rules setting in whatever firewall you have to get it to work well though.

341447 2005-04-05 00:24:00 I use Zone Alarm Pro no problems. I have to agree with tweak'e that the more people that use a paticular programe the more complaints you are going to get. I know more people that use Zone Alarm than any other firewall programe.

It doesn't let everything through . You'll have to specifically tell it most things that you want it to let through .

It will let most things go outwards though, unless you put a rule in place to not let certain traffic out . Incoming traffic is where the main issue is .

incoming traffic is not the main issue. OUTGOING TRAFFIC, or more importantly controlling what programs are going through it, is the MAIN issue.
XP firewall is better than nothing but still not good enough. you NEED application controll and a user who knows how to use it.

you don't need to be a fancy hacker/cracker/geek/whatever to hack a pc, the easiest way is to simply fool the user and going by the amount of spyware/malware infections that are posted here fooling the users is to easy to do.
