341268 2005-04-03 22:26:00 Hi,
Upon the recent death of a motherboard I exhumed the hard drive and have put it as the slave of an old Optiplex (running Windows 98 SE on both drives). Alas, no longer being the boot drive my Access and other programmes will no longer work (as it says there is no license for it on the machine.) Making it the primary drive has been a nightmare in trying to get anything to work properly (display, usb, modem) so I would be happy to leave it as the slave if I could get the darn software to work. Any suggestions?

Thanks very much

341269 2005-04-03 22:40:00 Well normally if something is installed on C, it'll look for programs on C .

Since most of the info required to run the program/s, will be in the registry .

And since it is now a slave, thats what the prob is .

It'll be better if u reinstall whatever programs were on the slave hdd, onto the main (C) hdd .

Copy whatever u want to keep, (ie: docs, email addresses, off the slave) to C then format the slave .

Or if u want the old hdd to work as c, you could try deleting everything in device manager (USB/display etc), and reboot . BUT then u may need the drivers for some of the devices that are installed at the mo .

ie: the modem . It'll be playing up, since it cant find what was on the old mobo, and the USB ports etc on the new mobo, may not be the same as what was on the old mobo .

341270 2005-04-03 23:26:00 The O/S on the HDD you took out has drivers etc for that old MB. When you connect it to a new PC windows detects all the new hardware which of course doesn't match with the new PCs hardware. SO it tries to update everything. Messy.
As a slave it should be OK, although sometimes if you have 2 active boot partitions it can cause problems.

341271 2005-04-04 00:44:00 or...........install 'boot-us' on the current c: and then put your hdd as a master on the secondary ide ..........that'll allow you to dual boot both .or should do.....however you will still have that driver issue.......... drcspy (146)

Tally ho!
