341994 2005-04-06 00:36:00 Grandson running Dell Inspiron 1100 Laptop with Win XP Home SP2. Recently when first opening left cl My Docs etc results in a DrWatson warning, by rt cl | open he can get into My Docs etc, the left cl then works OK until the laptop is shutdown. One recommendation found was to go to the boot.ini file in C:, open properties, uncheck read only, open in Notepad, look for
/noexecute=optin and change to
/noexecute=AlwaysOff
Gather this stops drwtsn.exe from loading.
Initially there was no boot.ini, went to Folder Options and changed Hidden Files to Show. Still no boot.ini
Queries are, presume Dell uses boot.ini and does Dell prevent use of the show hidden files. Secondly any comments on the recommendation to modify boot.ini

341996 2005-04-06 04:18:00 Dell doesn't use boot.ini. They just make the computer. Windows uses boot.ini .;)

I'm not totally sure of this, but that change might stop left clicks from executing the object clicked on. If the "My Documents" directory has somehow become classed as an executable programme, trying to execute it would naturally cause the Dr Watson error logger to run. Preventing that erroneous action would stop Dr Watson from stopping.

I'd regard this as a work-around, rather than a fix.

341997 2005-04-07 07:42:00 Thanks for comments. Appreciate boot.ini is part of Windows but as I could'nt find it thought perhaps Dell had had done some mods. Will undot Hide protected operating system files. Agree the suggestion sounds more like a work around than a fix.The Debugger was affecting all the menu items, My Docs, My Pictures, My Computer. Will try suggestion and see what happens. FrankS (257)
