341791 2005-04-05 02:42:00 Hi,

I have a requirement to replace an old CCTV security system and are looking at DVR as a replacement. Is there anyone out there that has experience in using a custom built PC that can give some comments on how it went, how well it does compared to say a purpose built DVR system.
Is there anyone that can point me towards a supplier that has experience and can give me pricing on doing this?

Cheers,

Andrew.

341792 2005-04-05 03:36:00 How many cameras are we talking about?? And how big is the area you want to cover??

And how much would you want to spend?

341793 2005-04-05 05:06:00 We had a commercial PC one... complete rubbish. It's based on Windows XP and we all know XP without a reboot is no good.

Go with a standalone hardware option.

341794 2005-04-05 07:40:00 I have installed a few security camera systems and used custome built PC's. The important factor is to make sure you have the correct hardware required for the security cards and software. If your hardware is not on the recommended list then expect problems. I have XP PC's runnning 1gig ram and HD size depends on days required to store. Graphics card is also very important and only some motherboards are supported. Set it up right and you shouldn't have any problems.

PM me if you want to discuss options etc

341795 2005-04-06 00:37:00 Have been quoted approx $4,500 for DVR system that will interface with my POS system, and approx $7,500 for a camera that can pan and zoom based on predefined options - typically when someone picks up a pump on the forecourt of my servo. Otherwise there are three existing camera's in the shop. Other option is to put 4 camera's on forecourt covering each lane, plus 2 or 3 in shop. andrew_ivey (7809)
341796 2005-04-06 08:37:00 You need to determine what your requirements and expectations from a DVR system now and for the future .

The shop is the easy part . You will want coverage over your till/s and shop area . Equipment required for this will depend on shop layout but dome cameras are normally sufficient . Maybe a better quality camera over the till to pick up any staff and customer misdemeanours .

The forecourt requires some thought . You may just be wanting a general overview and/or try to capture number plates . Number plates are not that easy to pickup . The white plates love to reflect sunlight so if your site is in a sunny position then be careful of camera type and position . Cameras positioned on the forecourt canopy are good for an overview but not idea for plates . Also the frame rate needs to be high to have the best chance of getting plates, but this uses HD space so big drives are required if you want to hold data for a month or more .

The quote you got could be a good or poor price . This would depend on what the hardware is – hard drive size, camera capabilities – 4,8,12 or 16, LCD screen etc . Also you need to check that the software is user friendly enough for you to use .

Pan cameras are expensive and I would not think suitable for complete coverage on the forecourt . More cameras seeing less each would be better and cheaper . Do you need the DVR system to interface with the POS system?

Good luck .
