2005-04-04 22:03:00 | Hello, I am having problems booting my system I try to start up my computer and it just shows a blank screen with a blinking cursor and the top left corner. I tried to run chkdsk in system restore but the message volume appears to contain one or more unrecoverable problems so that doesnt even run. I also tried to use knoppix to recover some files but the hard drives wont mount they are sata hard drives so if you know anything how to mount them that will be usefull. Please let me know what I should do. Thank You

2005-04-04 22:15:00 | I take it the SATA is onboard (the motherboard)? And is SATA the bootdisk in BIOS? Or was your system running before ?? And did u build this system yourself? And just tried to get it to work? And what version, of Windows are u using for the SATA??

2005-04-04 22:46:00 | Hmm ok sounds like something with the install of Linux or whatever u tried to do, may have stuffed the booting of the hdd . I'll have to let a Linux user figure out the Linux part, coz I know nothing about Linux . Does it boot in safe mode?? Can u select safe mode (F8) after booting, or cant it go that far??

2005-04-04 22:48:00 | Hello Speedy I am not trying to install linux I have just read on the internet when you cant get windows xp to start up you can use a linux live cd to recover files. | 341749 | 2005-04-04 22:54:00 | Oh ok then. Umm on that site I posted before, does it or did it say you're using the wrong cable at all?? When you booted the PC?? Another thing u can try, is if u can go into the BIOS set it to the defaults, then reconfigure it like it was before (putting the SATA hard drive as the bootdisk). And enable USB 1/2 if there's an option, in the BIOS for USB Is the SATA onboard? Or did someone install a PCI SATA card? If any cd's are in the cd rom or any floppies are in the disk drive (if you have a disk drive), take them out as well.

2005-04-04 23:00:00 | I have already tried setting the bios in default I put the sata hard drive in front of everything in the booting sequence but it is still the same thing and there is no option for the usb at 1/2. The sata is onboard I bought the computer brand new from dell and havent added any new hardware yet. Please let me know if there is anything else to try or help me recover some files. Thanks | ajonline (7761) | |
2005-04-04 23:08:00 | The only other thing, you could try, is open the case . BUT this may not be a good idea, if this Dell is still under warranty . SATA cables are pretty flimsy, and can come off pretty easy, if someone knocks the case . Maybe the connection to the SATA has come off somehow? When u selected the SATA in BIOS, does it show u the make/model of the SATA in the BIOS?? If it does, then it may not be the power connection going to the SATA, thats the prob .
