341814 2005-04-05 03:03:00 I have not updated to SP2 and now read that support will be withdrawn for machines not running SP2.
Looks like I'll have to update but after the debacle I had with SP1 I'm filled with dread and foreboding.............
Does anyone know of a site where they'll walk me thru' the install? (I have SP2 on MS discs)
I have cleaned for any spyware/adware but am concerned about my Kerio 4.2.0B4 and Avast AV. I wish to continue using these not the MS products that come with SP2.
Any traps I should be aware of?
Any helpful hints please?
Happy days to all

Hmm, and what does that mean? Never known MS to "support" your PC anyway, usually some tech does that if not yourself. I have only chnaged to XP in the last few months. For years people kept telling me 98 would have no "support". Couldn't care less...it was running happily, no problems, still plenty of drivers (until I got the new hardware). I never "updated" it ever either.
I have SP1 on this and see no reason to put SP2 on it.
However if you really feel you need to - just do it. If theres a problem you can always either do a system restore back or uninstall SP2. I have installed SP2 on tons of PCs. Only one had a problem, and on the 2nd attempt was ok.

341817 2005-04-05 03:36:00 Hi Kakapo. pctek says it all. i'm a rank amateur with systems and SP2 just installed itself sweet as. I later talked with several friends who had the same experience. I don't personally know anyone who has had problems with the install. Go to it if that's what you want. Scouse (83)
341818 2005-04-05 04:35:00 Yeah, SP2 pretty much has no problems as long as your pc is running fine. Most people had problems because they had auto updates turned on, and it updated sp2 in parts and then problems occured.

If you have the cd, I would say 99 out of 100 times it will be sweet, I have updated many PC's with SP2 through GPO with Server 2003, and standalones. All work fine.

One thing I would recommend is, go to Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Services. And disable the Security Center service. It really is BS, and always has these annoying pop ups if you turn off certain things. Also I would disable the Automatic updates, and do them manually. Disable the firewall also if you have firewall software.

Aside from that you should be sweet, and you'll get used to the web pop ups warning of ActiveX installers etc.

341819 2005-04-05 04:57:00 Just installed SP2 on a HP lappy (Pavilion ze4103s)
Everything went fine, it started grabbing more auto-updates from MS so I left it to do that.
Starting up today it asks for a login Password.
Its never had a login password.
Starting in safe mode it still asks for login passwords in both User and Admin.
I cant get into it to fix it. :badpc:

I have installed SP2 on lots of PC's and this is the first one to backfire...

This is why I use LInux on my own PC's :)

341820 2005-04-05 05:35:00 On this computer, I have SP2 only because I couldn't buy an O/S disc without it.
It runs sweet :). As far as firewall, updates etc.... I turned the default firewall off as I use a third party firewall. Updates have been turned off (though I did go to microsoft.com just the other day and did a manual scan... didn't need anything :)). Updates have been turned off since January this year. I'm not suggesting you turn them off, I'm just telling you what I do.
I haven't heard anything about no support for non SP2 machines... my laptop which runs quite a lot uses SP1 and I have no plans (although I have the SP2 disc) to change that at all.

If no passwords have been entered, it will certainly accept the "null" password . Even though MS don't know much about security, they're not that stupid . I hope . :)

Just use <Enter> in the Password line, or use the [Cancel] button in the window .

Tried that - User login complains of the usual "incorrect username or password" and Administrator complains the "the account is locked"
There is no cancel button, just a "shutdown" link.
