| 342514 | 2005-04-07 11:03:00 | Hello, Well i'm having problems. I've got a Dynalink RTA300 4port router. I have no problems with my other 3 Windows XP computers from getting the Internet. But this Windows 98se computer will not get the internet. I have set the Windows 98se computer ip to the following: IP: 192.168.1.88 Subnet: 255.255.255.0 Gateway: 192.168.1.1 I can both ping my router, and open this in the browser. So there is no issue with the Windows 98se computer not being on the network. I have been through the Internet Explorer, Internet Connection Wizard in which i used the following options. 1) I want to set up my Internet connection manually, or I want to connect through a local area network (LAN) (checked) 2) I connect through a local area network (LAN) (checked) 3) Automatic discovery of proxy server is (tried checked/unchecked) The firewall on the Router has been disabled, and Windows 98se does not have one. I have tried downloading the manual from Dynalink's website, but they only have the Quick Start guide. The Windows 98se computer does have a 56k modem in it, no DUN's connections have been made, prehaps this needs to be taken out? or disabled? Does anyone have any ideas on what i could do, to get the Internet on this Windows 98 computer? Thanks, |

What DNS servers addresses are you using in the 98 machines TCP/IP properties for the network adapter? You really should be using a firewall. By disabled the firewall on the router I hope you don't mean NAT, you'd be wide open to the world. |

There is a setting in the TCP/IP settings for the network card. It has Host ____ Domain ____ , unsure what goes there. Then it has 2 areas "DNS Server Search Order" and "Domain Suffix Search Order" do i put the DNS settings in both of those areas? and what about the Host & Domain area. The XP computers have software firewalls on them in. Yep be putting zone alarm, or another free software firewall on the Windows 98 computer. |

| 342517 | 2005-04-07 11:27:00 | In the DNS server search order put your ISP's DNS number in, for eg; Paradise's DNS server address numbers are - Primary: 203.96.152.4 Secondary: 203.96.152.12 Give that a go. |

Oh well my ISP is Xtra Primary: 202.27.184.3 Secondary: 202.27.184.5 Have put both DNS server address numbers in there, but is asking for host name for the Windows 98 computer? |

| 342519 | 2005-04-07 11:41:00 | AFAIK, shouldn't need a host name unless your running a domain. Your not talking about connection to the XP machines at this stage are you, just getting on the net? Nothing like VPN set up on the router is there? | Murray P (44) | ||

Nothing like VPN set up on the router is there? Well its asking for one, did a quick google and it says it should be the computer name. Nope just connecting to the Router, and nope haven't setup VPNs. |

| 342521 | 2005-04-07 11:47:00 | Yay it works! thanks for your help Murray P. Suppose you wouldn't know of any good free firewall software that would go alright with Windows 98? Besides those trial ones, that run out eventually. |

| 342522 | 2005-04-07 12:08:00 | I use Kerio free . You can use it as a never ending trial, but after 30 or so days, some functions are disabled . Still retains the main ones though . Agnitum Outpost is another . You'll have to check out there web pages to see if they still support 98 . Then there is Sygate personal fifrewall and Zone Alarm free . Here's some basic spin and links to websites ( . hackfix . org/software/firewall . html#outp" target="_blank">www . hackfix . org) Some more at Wilders ( . wilders . org/firewalls . htm" target="_blank">www . wilders . org) I have a bookmarked page with all the catagorised firewall and security links you could want . Strangely, it must only be bookmarked in Windows not Linux :xmouth: |
