I have been reading about above but have no idea what it is all about...do you.....

To register with a "mailing list", you are normally told to send an email containing just the word "subscribe" (or "unsubscribe"). The software at the other end automatically sends an acknowledgement, as well as doing the administrative stuff.

Another common use used to be the "vacation" option in email systems. If you were to be away for some time, you would leave a standard response, something like "I am away for 2 weeks from April 4. I will answer as soon as possible after that". So people would be told, and your incoming folder could busily fill to overflowing with spam. ;)
