342368 2005-04-07 03:04:00 hi, i am hoping to build my own computer soon and i am goin for the nvidea PCI-E 6800 ultra, i was just wondering if the PCI-E card is btr or worse than the agp i know the pci-e will be able to use 16x but are there any other diferences on the cards or are they abt the same. mickeyc (6724)
342369 2005-04-07 03:12:00 PCI-E is better, but it is also fairly new technology Overdrive_5000 (4950)
342370 2005-04-07 03:15:00 heh?

I would love to see the reasoning behind that statement.

Performance wise they are the same.

The AGP slot doesn't restrict performance, the entire move to PCI-E is an exorsise in marketing, forced onto consumers to motivate the upgrade cycle.

342371 2005-04-07 03:39:00 PCI-E won't give you a performance boost over AGP with current apps/games. Exactly how much benefit the increased bandwidth of PCI-E will be in the future is yet to be seen. Biggles (121)
342372 2005-04-07 03:56:00 Im willing to bet good money that we get a new slot to replace PCI-e about 3 years before they get even close to reaching the limits of its bandwidth.

Or it may just turn into a numbers game...

Where we will be able to buy mobo's with a 196xPCI_E slots, and 196x PCI_E video video cards.......

And the cards won't have even got close to the 16x speed of the current boards.....

G4MX now with 200xPCI_E......whoooohooo......

342373 2005-04-07 04:12:00 The Page (graphics.tomshardware.com) shows hardly any difference between AGP and PCI-E KiwiTT_NZ (233)
342374 2005-04-07 04:58:00 Ok I would like to take this chance to retract my previous statement. I only said that because since mickeyc was going to build up a new system and I thought that it would be better to suggest going with pci-e to save him upgrading again (e.g.. motherboard) once the benefits of Pci-e become more measurable. :) Overdrive_5000 (4950)
342375 2005-04-07 05:16:00 Spot on,which is why he should be giving serious consideration to PCI_E. Metla (12)
