342938 2005-04-09 03:50:00 Why do you want to go to Pro.

342939 2005-04-09 03:59:00 I don't really see the need for upgrading from Home to Pro. But of course, if you have the 'extra $' in your pocket and don't know what to do with it, then, it's another story.

You may have a very valid reason for doing so. Do we have the previlege to share it?

342940 2005-04-09 05:02:00 Well I recently had some trouble with my system, it was crashing quite a bit. After some advice from F1'ers I discovered that one of my 512MB sticks of RAM was faulty. After removing it I haven't had any problems really apart from one or two SVHOST errors.

I am in the fortunate position of getting Windows XP Pro from my dad who is a teacher. He has a school laptop which came with XP Home. He had problems with the school network and decided to buy (out of his own pocket) the XP Pro Academic upgrade. Once he installed that everything was fine (tech support at schoool had no idea what was wrong) This year he has upgraded his laptop again (also from school) but it already comes with XP Pro... so basically he formatted the old laptop and used the original XP Home OS it came with... leaving his purchased copy of XP Pro not installed on any PC or laptop.... he says I can have it if I want which I am glad to do provided that the install will leave my data structure the way it is now.

Isn't Windows XP Pro supposed to be more secure than XP Home or have more features than XP Home?

Hope that helps a little bit more.

cheers

342941 2005-04-09 05:10:00 Dunno bout more secure. Pro is just as bad lol.

Pro just gives u remote desktop (but I think there's some hack to do this with home), And Pro gives u permissions. I dont think Home has this.

There's a list of the differences on the MS site somewhere.

342942 2005-04-09 05:22:00 Hi Chief* Few points of comparison can be found here.... (www.winsupersite.com) . Friend of mine had problems with "upgrading" from Home to PRO, something to do with the PRO version being older than the HOME version already installed. He had to uninstall SP2 and eventually had to seek help from MS in Auckland. Scouse (83)
342943 2005-04-09 06:25:00 If the Pro version you are going to use is from another computer, you might have problems registering it with MS. The OS is registered to the Computer it was originally on, not the owner.

Which is precisely why it is recommended to do a fresh install. ;)

Windows XP Pro has better networking support than the Home edition and yes, it does have better security as required for business environments. The link provided by Scouse explains it all.

If you do go ahead and reinstall over the top of your current version I would strongly advise backing up all your data.
