342709 2005-04-08 05:32:00 Aaargh, I have a feeling that this subject is a broad one, but maybe someone can point me in the right direction !
I am my brothers PC keeper (mine runs like a charm...)
P4 2.4Mhz
2x HD (120 gig and 60 gig)
1024 MB Ram
OS: XP Pro
We are getting the Blue Screen of Death all too often and not always the same message:
"Windows\System32\Config\System" file missing...
Plus one mentioning possible new hardware installation conflicts..
Also a variety of error messages...

Incidentally this PC has very little software on it, and has very rarely seen the internet...

Having looked at a variety of possible remedies, I'm left a little confused (funny that...) and was hoping the esteemed PressF1 types may be able to help !
Regards Linz.

342710 2005-04-08 06:32:00 You need to run system file checker. Press the start button select run type in SFC /scannow press return. In about 30 seconds you well be ask to insert your Windows XP installation disk. Wait for the process to finish which well take 2 or 3 mins.
If that dosen't work I suggest you start looking for a virus or spyware.

342711 2005-04-08 07:35:00 Have you tested your RAM. Google and download mem86 or the one I prefer Goldmem
Faulty RAM can do some weird things, maybe good place to start.

Do you get dumped out while using the pc or does this error only occur on bootup ?

Will keep you posted, thanks...

342713 2005-04-08 08:27:00 Trevor I got as far as the PC searching (after asking) the disc, but then she died and I only got a black screen with the message of a missing/corrupt file
"windows\system32\config\system"
Will keep trying.....

342714 2005-04-08 08:34:00 It sounds like a hardware issue, probably the hard disk itself is dying. godfather (25)
342715 2005-04-08 08:37:00 Well it finally rebooted (with the disc in) and told me that a file had been repaired/copied...and then promptly died ( )
Then we got the blue screen (incidentally I have a digital picture of that, just have to figure out how to upload it..)
