1383822 2014-09-13 01:59:00 After the update of Win 8.1 on Friday, my "sounds" have disappeared. I get nothing from the CD player, any recorded MP3's or wave sounds.
I can not get the " Control Panel" to appear on screen either.
Can any one offer some help please ?
Thanks
Dennis

1383823 2014-09-13 02:13:00 Go to your All Apps, click the down arrow that appears at the lower left of the screen when you move the mouse pointer to there. Scroll across to find Control Panel, right mouse click it and choose Pin to Taskbar in the choices offered along the bottom.
Don't know why your sounds have disappeared though, maybe have a look in the Control Panel when you get into it.

1383826 2014-09-13 03:27:00 Don't leave updates on automatic. Whats it set to as default device under sounds? Are there any !'s or ?'s in device manager? Speedy Gonzales (78)

Go to the Start Screen, type Admin Tools Select Administrative Tools ( there will only be one) Double click the Services Shortcut, scroll down and locate Windows Audio, make sure its says Running, if Not Double click it and manually Start it, heres what the setting should be:

5919

Failing that, use system restore to roll the system back to before the updates. There were a few, so if it works again after rolling the system back, manually install updates one at a time making a restore point BEFORE installing the next one, till it breaks again, remove that update, and install whats left.

Thanks so far. I have followed the windows Audio and now get the following message " Error Ox800706cc. End point is a duplicate" I tried to "restore" a couple of times but got a message" Restore was unable to complete. A file is damaged" or similar type message so gave up on a restore.

1383829 2014-09-13 04:09:00 Want me to have a look with teamviewer?? Cant seem to find out what that error means. Usually if a service has errors, something it needs is missing. Or some other service that should be there (that it relies on) isnt there Speedy Gonzales (78)
1383830 2014-09-13 04:11:00 You sure that Error code is Correct ? doesn't appear to be any such result when searching google ?

You can try running chkdsk that "may" fix the problems, sounds ( no pun intended) theres some sort of corruption.

Go to the Start screen again, type in CMD, right click it, run as administrator:

5920

When it opens, type in chkdsk /r Press Enter, you will get a message saying the drive needs to be locked and would you like to run it next time you reboot, Type Y Press Enter, then reboot, it will run chkdsk.

It may take a while but let it run, "Usually" if it finds problems it often will stop at a certain %, just leave it running. A couple I've done actually took over 4 hours, a few I set going and leave over night.
