1383552 2014-09-09 05:24:00 Hi .

I am a little confused about the speeds of laptops these days .

For a student with a budget of $400 -450, I've seen a number of laptops brand new on TradeMe roughly at this price range . However the specs for them (I think are pretty low) .

Most are at 1 . 4GHZ with 2 CORES and 4GB Ram . Having said that I have an old laptop running at 1 . 6GHZ with 1 GB of ram, a 2001 model or older . Would I notice any significant difference If I brought a brand new laptop running at 1 . 4ghz at all in comparison to my 1 . 6ghz laptop?

What I do mostly is use Microsoft Word, use the internet to do research and watch you tube videos . No gaming or for hefty programs .

Thanks, but I dont want to squint my eyes looking at those teeny wenny things. I am a guy. I dont need those pansy 10-14'inch screens. Those are for sissies. My old laptop is 15.6" thats more appealing than those ones made for girls.

Depends what the cpus are, instructions per clock matter a lot more than the clock speed itself (although I would imagine something from the last couple years is going to be a lot faster than anything made in 2001).

Computers are like most things in the sense that you get what you pay for. $400-$450 isn't going to get you a lot. You could go secondhand but you're obviously going to have no idea as to how the laptop has been treated. I would personally wait until I had a larger budget and go from there.

You sound like you need glasses if you are squinting to read a tablet screen

No you wouldn't notice any difference or loss in speed as the programs you would running are just garden variety programs.

Never had a tablet. I have big hands. My hands are not made for puny screens, so I type better and faster than I push or touch keys on screen.

Fair enough, I've seen a few guys with big or stubby fingers that are more suited to typing on regular laptop keyboards.

Thanks for your response. I think your answer is what I have been dreading. So, I might need to look at least 2.GHZ or higher to notice any change. You see, on my old laptop, all I have is Office 2010 and Firefox, but it takes up to 8minutes to load Word before I can begin typing. Sometimes longer. My firefox browser takes 4 -6 minutes to load but uses a lot of memory, so freezes every so often even though I've recently reinstalled Windows 3 months ago.
