1383159 2014-09-02 23:04:00 Hi,

I have been sent an .mkv video by a friend and need to convert it to something more friendly - say mp4 or avi so I can use in a presentation. I downloaded a free converter and ended up with a hijacked browser:devil (the reason for my earlier post, issue sorted thanks to Speedy Gonzalaz:clap).

Can anyone recommend a free, simple to use mkv converter that will retain video/audio sync and not have a time (video length) restriction on it, but also WILL NOT HIJACK my browser?

Thanks as always... Apo

1383160 2014-09-02 23:15:00 This should convert it (www.freemake.com). The 1st file. BUT, make sure you untick the 3rd party programs. When you install it. It is free.

Also unless you donate (even $2) it'll add a small logo at the end of the converted video. Other than that there are no restrictions in it

You can also edit the video before you convert it

I use this one, I note that the installer may now have adware . You can often untick the adware options
www.videohelp.com

The best option is to download VLC player, & play the mkv with that rather than convert it.

1383163 2014-09-02 23:24:00 Thanks 1101,

I am converting now using the converter suggestred by Speedy. If that is dodgy at all will look at VCL player. Have shied away from a player as I didn't want to have to get to my presentation site and then encourage them to download a programme to play my presentation. CHeers

1383164 2014-09-02 23:32:00 Tried VLC Player to play it? Or maybe search video help com (www.videohelp.com)for mkv. I use to use their guides a while back for conversions for other formats. kahawai chaser (3545)
1383165 2014-09-02 23:37:00 If you're using Win7 or 8 (well win 7), it should play MP4 and AVI. Without using anything else. That freemake video converter is pretty good, I use it here quite a lot for editing / converting to other video formats

Never had any probs with the video or audio being out of sync. Unless the original video, was out of sync

1383166 2014-09-03 00:10:00 Just used the converter suggested by Speedy (www.freemake.com) and it works awesome, no damage to the audio/video sequence. Yes, leaves a small logo at the very end, but nothing of consequence. Program does what it says, is simple to use, and is FREE. Aporosa (5671)
1383167 2014-09-03 00:10:00 Theres plenty of free ones about, some are better than others.

used all of the Following, some work Ok on some files some don't, all depends on how the original was created. NO WATERMARKS either.

Video to Video - http://www.videotovideo.org/ NO malware or surprises with this.

Handbrake - https://handbrake.fr/ Only has MP4 or MKV output

Vidcoder --http://vidcoder.codeplex.com/ Only has MP4 or MKV output

Have a look at www.giveawayoftheday.com sometimes they give away all sorts of media software (to many - there's truck loads of them all the time) another place is www.windowsdeal.com/ A site giving away software daily, as well as some damn good discounts - just got a program over the weekend I've been meaning to upgrade 60% discount :banana

1383168 2014-09-05 22:52:00 Hi,I used Format Factory which was great it converts almost anything under the sun, including audio files, but I have since started using Ice Cream Media Converter which again is excellent but is much faster. Both are free. ruup (1827)
