1382741 2014-08-28 23:37:00 Current modem is a TG789vn and older one was a HG556a. I have no idea what I'm doing, I only get about 2 bars in my room and was hoping to increase it. nerd (109)

If you take an ethernet cable from the new router/WAP to the old one in a new location. The router/WAP you refer to does not operate in bridge mode to be an extender.

Explain your current setup, like where the ONT and ISP supplied router are sited and where your room is in relation to them. We need a better picture!

1382744 2014-08-29 08:37:00 The ONT and Router are basically next to each other which are both on the other side of the house. I think I just need to get a better router. It's not like I get BAD internet, it's just not fantastic. nerd (109)
1382745 2014-08-29 11:48:00 What ISP are you with? If Spark, you will be using POTS copper for the phone but if someone else, you will be using VOIP.

Can you run a cable from the router to somewhere closer to your room? If so, you could move your ISP router to where you run the cable (need a power point of course). That way the wifi aerial is closer so you would expect a stronger signal.

Also, are we talking same floor?

Fundamentally, you need the wifi aerial closer to the devices you are using.

1382746 2014-08-30 00:01:00 Is that a Telecom router, some of them are locked down.

We have UFB now and someone took a old ADSL router to his bedroom - the room has ethernet cable so he plugged it in and it provided further wirelesss range for his iPad / smart phone etc. Disable DHCP on the router.

A friend also just got one of those wireless extenders - his house doesn't have ethernet cables at all ... seems to work ok for him.
