1368509 2014-02-26 23:00:00 What happens if the problem is related to no internet connection ?

There's always the phone :) aka talk him through the steps. My girlfriend does it with her dad when ever he has an issue with getting or setting up a music folder on his PC to sync with his iPod touch.

1368510 2014-02-26 23:06:00 Actually its not just the "pretty" aspects of a new UI, its the easier to use aspects that are encouraging consumers and worker bees to move away from stodgy hard to use UIs to something that has actually been designed with the user experience in mind.

Yes there are a lot of ramifications to consider when moving from the traditional desktop to a hand held computing device and with a planned approach, those goals are all achievable within a measured time frame. The end result being much happier more productive staff.

I agree with you to a degree, no one like using kludgy software UI, it will be nice if all software can aspire to the polish that Apple is known for (they are still not perfect, there are lots of documented design inconsistencies too). The reality is businesses need "certainty", they need to control how things are tested and rolled out. The ramification of this particular little bug is way bigger than most people realise, the bug existed since 2012! It really does cast some doubt on their recent decline in their QC processes, or lack of.

What happens when people cant follow instructions over the phone - I have struck it some times. Many people don't know the difference between the address bar or search box in Browsers.

One person I'm going to call on tomorrow as I'm passing,( told her to have the coffee ready ) Telecom called her as part of their promotion to talk her through changing the port numbers in her email to the secure, she told me the person was on the phone for over 30 minutes and she couldn't follow what was being said.

I told her to open her browser -- Whats that ? Finally got it open, and told her to type in the address bar- the bar along the top where it says http://www.google.co.nz. the address to a remote program thats idiot proof to run, she couldn't even do that -Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr :badpc: I was gonna do it remotely.

Its easy for people who know what they are doing, but remember NOT everyone can follow instructions no matter how exact you are (the person helping).

Its not about being "exact" its about being able to communicate simple instructions over the phone in a non technical manner . That's why I get my girlfriend to do it, she's awesome at that sort of thing ;)

What we technically minded people have to understand is that the person on the other end of the phone has no idea what Firefox, IE or an Internet Browser is .

Thats all techno babble to them .

You are probably better off getting the person to look for the round blue button on their screen that has the letters IE on it . When they find it, use the mouse to move the pointy arrow over it and click once . Then walk them through in laymans terms from that point .

Been doing this for over 11 years, I know how to talk to people and describe things in "laymans terms" and while some of that is true, many people don't have a clue even when you point out EXACTLY where something is . Its as if they are looking at it, but cant see it .

I dont know how many times I've said exactly what you mentioned "look for the round blue button on their screen that has the letters IE on it" OR more to the point and more exact, the BIG BLUE E with a gold band around it, and they still cant see it, yet go to their place and when you look at the screen point it out "oh that one" (and its the only thing that even remotely looks like it) ;)

I remember one person, I was at their place and a week later they called me for something else . I remembered exactly where the icon was I was asking for the remote one I had put on , the sixth one down on the left (they were locked in place) -- Yet they still couldn't find it :groan:

Have you tried asked them to describe what icons they are looking at on screen? (in the part of the screen that you know that the icon is located)

(in the part of the screen that you know that the icon is located)Yep - --(Described by them) OH- its a round colored thingy with a piece off to one side -- That was relating to Ccleaner. Which actually is a Big Red C with a blue handled paintbrush on it.

Now try that with a person has lots of icons on the desktop -you'd go gaga trying to figure it out :waughh:

The Remote one I was after was described as a Orange square with rounded corners has a white figure in the middle and the wording Impcremote, and it was the sixth one down on the left.

Yet they couldn't see it even though it was there and they had a blueish desktop background

I don't envy you wainuitech, all I can say is that I'm glad that I can hand all that tech support stuff off to my better half. Communicating is her specialty.

you just grin and bear it :p Thats why often when fixing things its a lot easier if you can actually see the problem than try to have someone describe it.

Spose it could be described like your web design - if someone tried to describe a fault on a page, you may be going WTF ??? Yet if you saw it - Awhhh Easy to fix :)
