1383563 2014-09-10 00:40:00 Hi Speedy,

Thanks for your help . I rather go brand new as the one I am currently using was second hand which I had bought 2 years ago and its dying already . I just don't want to invest on another second item that may only last a short time too, but thanks for the suggestion of other laptops . Office and Operating systems are not necessarily important as I have the software .

If you or someone else have time what do you think of these laptops? Do you think they would be worth the effort of buying or should I look for higher specs?

1383564 2014-09-10 01:47:00 Thanks for your response. I think your answer is what I have been dreading. So, I might need to look at least 2.GHZ or higher to notice any change. You see, on my old laptop, all I have is Office 2010 and Firefox, but it takes up to 8minutes to load Word before I can begin typing. Sometimes longer. My firefox browser takes 4 -6 minutes to load but uses a lot of memory, so freezes every so often even though I've recently reinstalled Windows 3 months ago.

Just re read your original specs from your original machine.. ok, that's kinda under powered. I think most laptops these days come out with 4Gig of RAM and tend to start up in under a minute.

I’d be inclined to increase the RAM if you can and see what happens.

Also, if you’ve plenty of room on your HDD, fix the page file size to at least the amount of RAM, as Windows can be quite slow automatically allocating page file size and recovering the contents when there are bits everywhere.

I’ve had some excellent results from just doing the above. ;)

And I take it the normal “housekeeping” is up to date as well. :)

1383566 2014-09-10 04:37:00 What matters more is having multiple cores. If your old cpu is a single core one, a 1.4GHz dual core will beat the pants off it in terms of responsiveness. The 4GB RAM will help as well.

Why don't you have a play with one in a shop? I think you will be pleasantly surprised, especially seeing your current appalling wait times. New machines have faster disk drives and that makes a big difference, too.

There is something else going on with your old one, but that is another story.

Good luck.

1383567 2014-09-11 04:27:00 Surprised (and pleased) to see someone (Speedy G) recommending HP. Other reviews and posts I've read have been so negative about both Dell and HP. I've had a desktop computer of each brand and have had no bother with either of them. We want a 15.6" notebook with 2-3 USB ports, dvd drive - not important; 4GB RAM; 500GB HDD(both minimum); camera, Wins 7 preferably!!! Would go up to $650-700. Notebook will be used mainly for internet work, as we'll keep the desktop for storage, writing (Office) and photoshop work. Have been using XP on a Dell Dimension 1100 2.8GHz, desktop with 1GB RAM and 160GB on C drive since April 2006, so anything would be quicker than that combination. Saying that I have keep it 'clean' and not loaded down with extra rubbish. We saw a couple of HP items we liked but have been put off by the negative comments. Would appreciate any ideas. Thanks. Back to the reviews! katharinem (3459)

That's probably because Dell PCs are normally bottom of the barrel and HP are only marginally better.

The best PCs are probably the custom build ones.

1383569 2014-09-11 05:06:00 Both HP & Dell have cheaper consumer lines that are ok and more expensive business class hardware that is built to a higher standard and costs a lot more.
Our field staff destroy laptops with ease no matter what they are but the corporate hardware does last better.

A lot depends on how you treat things of course, I have a HP envy DV6 I got from a police auction for $100 (then spent $300 replacing missing bits) that is a pretty decent laptop but it sits on a desk most of the time and doesn't get abused. Trouble is my tablet has spoilt me for what a screen should look lie and the laptop is poor by comparison.

Hi. Thanks for your feedback. Although I wish I could upgrade, it will end up being expensive. My HDD though is 80 gb in size but I might try your above suggestion and see if it helps. Oh by the way, normal housekeeping is exceptional where I live too. Cheers.

Thanks for the suggestion about playing with one in store. What a good idea!!! I thought to ask expert advice here first so I can take with me some of the advice and knowledge when looking for a laptop. At times salespeople can be confusing or not much help with questions I have or I have to draw the answer out of them. Cheers.
