Same with cars, if written off they may then de-register/send to wreckers, so it cant simply be bought & cheaply fixed by the original owner . |

It's like when you write off your car, they take it and sell it for whatever they can get to recoup some costs. Of cause they now own it, in effect they bought it from you by paying you out the value of your replacement. What you paid in premiums is irrelevant, how else do they make money - and they are there to make money, not act as a charity. pctek.....Crikey - no need to get snappy. I was merely asking a question. It seems that the time, money and effort they would incur in repossessing the carpet would cost more than any money they would recoup from selling it. Over half of the carpet is unusable and the replacement is valued at about $1200. The carpet when new, cost us a lot more than that and we had the floor sanded and paid for the underlay as well. Thanks to everyone else-we have made very few claims and the claims we have made have have been for breakages, nothing like this. It was the way the carpet sales rep mentioned "They would take care of it for us!" that made us feel a bit suspicious. So on all that good advice we'll definitely get in touch with the insurance company. Thanks again. |

Is it usual for insurance companies to keep the damaged items? That looks like a question to me.... As far as we are concerned we paid for the carpet, we have paid many thousands of dollars to this company in fees over thirty plus years in all areas of insurance, why should they want damaged goods back? We had intended using the undamaged carpet to replace a small area in another room and have any other usable pieces made up into rugs. That looked like a whinge.... |

| 1368724 | 2014-02-26 18:35:00 | I had a classic car once which I crashed. Insurance company paid me out, I bought another (rather nicer model). One of the car club members, I found later, had bought my wreck from the insurance sale. The only damage was to radiator and front panels. He was most pleased he'd got it for a bargain and was able to restore his own using the majority of mine - and he got a good spare motor, gearbox etc. Should I have been entitled to keep my wreck as well as get the money? Nah, I was quite pleased he managed to get mine, he went on to do his up immaculately. |

| 1368725 | 2014-03-01 07:40:00 | We contacted the insurance company and after a couple of phone calls they were more than pleased to allow us to purchase the damaged carpet at the price suggested by the carpet retailer. They are pleased also that it will save them one or two steps in the whole salvage claims process. So we've learnt a bit more about insurance. Many thanks to the lovely people on this forum along with the lovely lady at the insurance company. Point of interest - the new carpet with our purchase price deducted, will cost approximately $1100. | katharinem (3459) | ||
| 1368726 | 2014-03-01 18:23:00 | Well done. Most are only too happy to resolve salvage in such a way. Not as messy and time consuming to the Insurance Company. | Bryan (147) | ||
| 1368727 | 2014-03-01 19:09:00 | When I was knocked off my bike a few years ago, the bike was a write-off: smashed front wheel, broken frame. The insurance company did the assessment, left me with the pieces and paid me out. I went on to pull the wreck apart and sell off some of the undamaged bits via TradeMe (brakes, crankset, back wheel, handlebars, seat etc) - which would have been impractical for the insurance company... | johcar (6283) | ||
