1383880 2014-09-14 01:15:00 Hi All.
Looking to do backups of our hard drives. Using W8.1. To use the built in backup means using the MS Cloud. I don't want to do that, I want to put it on a portable HD. Is there a program somewhere in W8.1 to let me do that. Thanks. PJ

WT used to recommend AOMEI Backupper.

1383882 2014-09-14 01:46:00 Depends on what you want to back up.

If its the whole HDD ( image the drive) then as Bryan mentioned AOMEI is a good free one. Another paid one is Active@ - I use both. There are plenty about that can be used. The biggest thing you have to check on is that once you do a backup, that it actually works.

This is generally done by putting the image back onto another drive, so you will need a Bootable CD to do that, AOMEI has that option. Seen way to many times backup software says its done the job then when its needed it has actually failed (this can happen with any Software)

You can also use the inbuilt Windows 8.1 option. winsupersite.com

If its only backing up files, Eg: Pictures, Documents etc, no real need to use any software - Just a Simple Copy /Paste.

If you do want to use backup software, SyncBack Free (www.2brightsparks.com) also works well, there's LOTS of options, ( sometimes to many) ;)

1383883 2014-09-14 01:48:00 windows 8 still has the option to create a system image, it's just not anywhere obvious.

Control panel > system & security > file history > look on the bottom left corner

1383885 2014-09-14 03:13:00 I learnt - back up what you believe you really need. Many backup's I have done, then realise later I don't need those documents/photo's/exe's/templates, etc. Became outdated/unneeded. But good practice to backup. And as WT says that it can be easily restored...

But I think important to sort/organize files/folders and clean pc prior to backing up.

1383886 2014-09-14 03:20:00 I use Duplicati to encrypt and backup files to online services, and SyncBack Free for copying to external drives. Agent_24 (57)

FWIW none of the built in backup features in Windows 8.1 use "the MS Cloud"

1383888 2014-09-14 04:24:00 I've got File History in Windows 8.1 copying to a NAS, essentially the same thing as what you want to achieve. I also have my pictures on OneDrive as an additional backup. pcuser42 (130)
1383889 2014-09-14 05:55:00 Thanks for the replies. I am only wanting to backup My Docs & Email. 2 drives, C=42.5GB & D=46.4GB used. I assume to copy all of that I would need to use a portable hard drive, or if very selective use discs. I will check out the suggestions & let you know what I will do...first!!! PJ Poppa John (284)
