343162 2005-04-09 10:25:00 Have done a reformat of my hardrive and went to reinstall windows 98 only to get a bad file message. starting with a floppy disk gives the message "invalid Fat32 partition" Whats the story, I have a clean slate but can't reinstall. This has been an ongoing problem for some weeks now with the computer going and not going. We put a new battery in and it went ok for a while but then gave up.
It's not dead the hardrive still does stuff hence the reformat and when we put the CD in the light goes on but the computer says theres no-one home.

343163 2005-04-09 10:38:00 If you took the battery out (the CMOS battery), it would have reset the BIOS .

Did you reconfigure the BIOS??

So Primary IDE Master (whatever the hdd is on), is on AUTO and Master, or Secondary Slave is on AUTO, whatever IDE connection the CD is on)?

(So the BIOS knows the hdd and cd exist)? And then make the cd / floppy the bootable disk in BIOS, then save the settings?

If there's a floppy in the disk drive, and it isnt needed take it out .

343164 2005-04-09 21:53:00 If the PC isn't finding the HDD, then your CD will be now C: rather than D:.
In which case it won't have a valid partiton.
As Speedy says, check the BIOS finds both.
Then boot off the CD and install that way, a floppy is really just an extra step.
What is the actual message you get when you "put the CD in"? It doesn't sya no-one home, its says...?

343165 2005-04-10 02:54:00 No it doesn't say theres no one home I was being facetious as I'm a grandmother of three who is learning about all this stuff and really enjoying it. I'd love to know half the stuff you guys do and am an avid pupil , half of what you tell me is mind boggling and I have to go look it all up to find out what you are talking about so please bear with me. How do you reconfigure Bios??? I've tried to find out but no success so far. Can you give simplish instructions or is this out of my league??

343167 2005-04-10 03:49:00 Firstly. to get into the BIOS its generally by pushing the delete (DEL) key when you turn on the PC. (Unless you have a compaq or something).
What you are looking for is:
Primary Master - usually the HDD
Primary Slave
Secondary Master - usually the CD
Secondary Slave

If the bios can see both the HDD and the CD then you're fine to go onto the next part. If not you need to look at the jumpers on the back of the drives, the cables and so on.

There is normally a menu item in the BIOS as well called BOOT.
This is where you can chnage the CD to be the first device.
That way it will boot off the Windows CD>

Bad command or file name means either you typed the wrong command (typo) or the file you tried to run does not exist in the location it is using.
IE: a:\setup.exe
Which may not exist on the floppy.
In fact probably doesn't.
To use the floppy you'd need to chnage to the cd drive>
d:

Then type
setup.exe

Or possibly
cd win98
setup.exe

I can't remember with the Win98 CD now...

None of that will help until you have the drives set up correctly first though.
