343157 2005-04-09 07:48:00 I have win 98 and IE 6
did have Nortons installed but uninstalled and installed AVG.
I have Adware and Spybot installed and also ZoneAlarm

the computer can connect to the internet but that is all. I can't view any pages, recieve any email, download updates for for software etc

I can ping dns Address (ie 216.193.194.212) but not the web addresses (ie gamesnmore.co.nz)

typing anything in the address bar just brings up page cannot be displayed or Internet Explorer failed to find search page.

It was working fine earlier today (before I changed Nortons with AVG)
I have scanned the PC for viruses and Spyware and removed all. I have tried reinstalling IE and also removing and reinistalling TCP/IP.

I have tried having ZoneAlarm off, I have reinstalled ZoneAlarm, I have tried turning everything in the startup tab in Msconfig, off, but I still have no internet.

Please anybody HELP! (I am using another computer to post this obviously)

343158 2005-04-09 08:38:00 Hmm sometimes Nortons (depending on which version u had) can kill net access. So can Zonealarm. (Or used to if u uninstalled and reinstalled it).

Umm in your dialup (are you on dialup or ADSL)?

Since u have 98, is there anything under the dialup under TCP/IP?? And whats it on?? Obtain or use the following ip address?

Work offline under file menu, in Internet Explorer isnt ticked is it??

343159 2005-04-09 08:53:00 yes I am on dial up.

I actually figured out the problem with the help of HijackThis. As I had not found the solution anywhere else I thought I would post here letting others know of the solution if they ever came across it.

The problem was with the LSP (Layered Service Provider) Basicly what that is, is when you connect to the internet the computer looks here and figures out how to access the different pages etc. Now some Viruses and spyware (virus in this case) link themselves into the LSP. When you remove the virus or spyware it breaks the link in the LSP and thus you can't access the internet.

Fortuneatly fixing the problem is a breaze. simply download lspfix from www.cexx.org and run it. then hey presto you have internet access back again :)

343160 2005-04-09 08:59:00 Ah ok good u found the prob .

One program that fixes what u got is Trojan remover .

This program also resets the homepage, (that spyware can change), the hosts file, (which worms etc can add ip addresses to), Windows update policies (in case a worm or something changes your windowsupdate info, in the registry), and repairs the layered service provider registry entries :)
