2005-04-09 01:48:00 | Heya. Just got 2x 120gig sata drives and been reading up all of google on raid etc etc. Assuming I know the basics, 0s striping 1s mirror. I'm wondering if anyone can give me any tips on what to use. From what i understand 1 uses an entire drive to mirror what you have so you end up with only one actual USABLE drive and one backup in case the other dies. Don't really think this is feasible since I need the extra space. Striping from what I've heard is dodgy unless you use software method??? Not really sure how to go about pulling that off.. Anyone know how that'd work? Recommended softwares and what not. So Assuming I don't want Mirror and Stripes dodgy does that leave me with just 2 standard separate drives??? Not really any other options are there?

Also if u do use raid and sata is onboard, u have to enable it in the BIOS and will most probably have to make a driver disk with the SATA drivers on them. As they may have to be installed when u install XP. Or whatever operating system you're installing. |

2005-04-09 02:49:00 | hmmm. Any tips then for keeping the drives running smooth? I'm gonna be planning out my windows experience this time... lol. Keeping installed programs to a minimum. Have written a list of about 20 or so that I use and need. I'll keep the defragmentation and stuff to a weekly thing etc. Any other tips? Virus Protection??? I've had loads of problems with Norton 2004 & 2005 screwing windows up so I'll be steering clear of them.... Using panda at the moment. Anyone hav any recommendations in that area?

2005-04-09 03:00:00 | Umm, I partitioned this SATA (120 GB) into 2 one 20 GB (For XP) the other 92-100 GB . This way if XP dies or something, it wont take so long to reinstall XP, and it may not take as long defragging the hdd . I use the 100 GB Partition and some of the IDE hdd for video editing . I just use Norton Internet Security 2003 (I've read 2004 and 2005, have flaws in them, at the mo) . And use Spampal (free) for spam, Ad-aware, (free), and Xoftspy (this isn't free), for spyware .

2005-04-09 03:21:00 | Well, I use Kaspersky (not free) as my usual AV, AVG7 (free) as a backup (to double check)) - no clashes :D Outpost firewall, Spybot, Spyware Blaster, and occasionally Ad-Aware. Wouldn't touch anything Nortons again with a 40 foot bargepole, and I don't really like McAfee (2004) either But in the end, its your choice

2005-04-09 03:26:00 | Thats what raid is for. To have a backup. If you just want two usable drives don't use raid. Not only that but to have fast speed. RAID0 does fast speed. RAID5 is a mix if your MB etc supports it. I have been using RAID0 for over a year now and have never had a problem with it ever. Keep normal backups just in case of emergencies or stupidness but never used either. Depends on what you want for RAID0 (Speed/Space) or RAID1 (redundancy). Sounds like he wants the former so needs to go with RAID0.

2005-04-09 03:30:00 | To Mythix: I've got Panda at the moment and Spybot & Ad-Aware. I don't think I'll ever Touch microsoft Antispyware again. Slowed my computer down baddddd last time. Dodgy crap. To Big John: My mate who's pretty knowledgeable said Striping but yea I've read it up and I don't really think I can be bothered risking losing data... So I'm thinking of just doing it the normal way. Still thinking though really >_<
