343006 2005-04-09 03:34:00 To Big John: My mate who's pretty knowledgeable said Striping but yea I've read it up and I don't really think I can be bothered risking losing data... So I'm thinking of just doing it the normal way. Still thinking though really >_<

RAID0 is exactly the same as normal setup except you have lose everything even if only one drive fails. As I said I have no issues because I backup my important data anyway and like the nearly double double speed increase of disk access.

343007 2005-04-09 03:38:00 Thats what raid is for. To have a backup.
If you just want two usable drives don't use raid.
That is one use of RAID. Another use is to increase the speed of writing to the hard drives. Can't remember off the top of my head which RAID that is but the total capacity available is equivalent to the sum of both (identical) disks. So Meilad would be able to use 240GB but if one drives fails then ALL of the data is lost because it is saved alternately to each drive.

Not a good system unless you are able to backup your data. ;)

[Edit: Argh!! Should have done refresh before posting, John beat me to it!]

343008 2005-04-09 03:45:00 I'm gonna be planning out my windows experience this time . . . lol .
This article ( . short-media . com/review . php?r=281" target="_blank">www . short-media . com) gives some very good tips for setting up your hard drive and is well worth reading .

Tip: Click on the Print button and save the document to your hard drive for reading offline or at your leisure . I have printed out bits that I am interested in to refer to when I need it .

Huh. Was wondering why the recent craze for RAId. Since its been around for ages and no-one used to care.
Still, I'd much rather have the space.
And NCQ on a Seagate sATA.

343011 2005-04-09 04:30:00 Oh yeah, I nearly forgot - check out the forum's FAQ #43 on partitioning, it has got some good advice in it. FoxyMX (5)

You would have the space though. Plus quite a bit of speed. See Big John's post.

343013 2005-04-09 04:40:00 Hmm I think the question I should be asking is...

What do you guys use. Anyone here use Striping? / Normal Setup. Experiences with Striping anyone??? Basically the impression I get and I quote one place, in so many words, "striping is not meant to be a long term solution, rather a short term speed booster for video editing etc"

To answer a question above first is that now MB's are supporting RAID from the MB instead of requiring add in cards so are much better.

I use RAID0 (stripping) to get both the speed increase and the data size increase of the total drives. I have 2x120GB Segate SATA drives configured and that gives me about 238GB total space to use. I use it for copying CD ISO images to to avoid constant disk swapping for games.
For my main data I back it up so no issue if a drive fails. Been using it for about a year now with no failures at all (touch wood).

343015 2005-04-09 05:28:00 Geez, didn't know there was someone out there with exact same size & drive model as me.

Might give this striping a go now :p Hey uh they say software raiding is more reliable? What sorta software is this and is it only win 2000 cause thats all I've found from google...

oh another thing when you raid stripe I know you have to set cluster size i think it was? Whats a recommended size. 64k???
