344005 2005-04-12 06:34:00 Hey all,
I have a problem with my partners computer which I think I know what the problem is, but am not 100% sure.

Symptoms: start computer...
CD light flashes a couple of times, and goes off (normal); CD tray can be opened or closed normally
turn monitor on... light goes green, then flashes orange
harddrive doesn't start
CPU fan starts
No beep code on startup (normal) - will beep continuously if somethings wrong (no keyboard etc)
Floppy doesn't have a light, so cant tell if thats going
Keyboard light flashes on, then goes off (USB wireless k/board and mouse)

BTW its a P3 Celeron, Acer mobo, runs Win 98 first edition

Im thinking motherboard or CPU; what do you think?

344007 2005-04-12 06:48:00 One final thing, it happened suddenly as computer was fine last time it was started (about 2 days ago)
Nothing was changed then (software or hardware)
Today I had acquired a few second hand parts, put some of them in (to test they worked, with the intent of selling them) and noticed the problem. Reverted back to old setup and it still wouldnt start.

Aha. What hardware did you install? Tell us exactly what you did before this occurred.
Specs of the system would help too.

344009 2005-04-12 08:05:00 Ok, took out existing pci modem and installed an ALi PCI graphics card, connected monitor to that, added another CD ROM (connected it using existing CD drives master on the Secondary IDE, but used another molex power connection), was going to add another modem but discovered the modem used a 16 bit ISA connection so didn't.
The above second hand parts came from an AT mobo with Pentium CPU, researched the parts online and saw they all had 98 drivers so knew they should work with the O/S. Went to run it with the above, and it wouldnt run. Took all second hand parts out and tried to start with existing parts. No Go.
Partners comp is Intel Celeron (P3 era), Acer mobo, about 4-5 years old, not much RAM other than that, not sure sorry

344010 2005-04-12 08:54:00 About all I can tell you about the mobo is it has a SiS chipset, with SiS 620 North Bridge.
PSU is 200V standard PSU

200v? Or 200w?
Ok, you'll have to do this the hard way.
Take out everything except what you need to make it boot. (CPU and ram)
See if it boots, if not try another PSU, RAM.
If still not then its probably not worth continuing - it will be either MB or CPU.
If it does, start adding parts back one at a time. And see which one it stops with.

344012 2005-04-12 09:10:00 200 Watts sorry

Ok will do it that way, and let you know how I get on.
Any idea what a second hand P3 and mobo are worth, and where I can get one if its one of those 2?

344014 2005-04-13 01:30:00 Check all the cables. Particularly that the IDE cables are the right way around (pin1 to pin1). Some disk drives don't have keyed connector housings; some cables haven't got keys; some (rare) cables have keys on the wrong side.

And partner is looking for a partner who won't take the lid off partner's computer.;)
