343825 2005-04-11 11:01:00 Hello,

Another friend is having hard drive problems, that’s giving me a head ache. The system is a HP Pavilion 6616, Celeron 566MHz, 64RAM, Windows 98se, it comes with a system recovery disk, but it’s not detecting the hard drive. The hard drive is a Maxtor (2F030L0) 30GB drive.

The hard drive is detected in the BIOS. But during the POST test I get the message "WARNING 0200: Failure Fixed Disk 0". However when I use the system recovery disk it suggests me to use a boot disk and use FDISK to repartition it. When I try using FDISK from a Boot Disk I get the error "No fixed disks present."

I have tried using different hard drives with no luck, different IDE cables, checked Maxtor website for the correct Jumper Settings. I have set the hard drive to Primary Master. It worked with a Seagate 4GB, but that’s too small so want to try a bigger hard drive. Also have tried a Maxtor 20GB with the same results.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Sleepy (7202)
343826 2005-04-11 11:12:00 Yes, but have you actually downloaded and used the manufacturers diagnostic tools.

maxtor website (http://www.maxtor.com/). Look for Maxblast.

Alternatively, HP may have their own diagnostic tools with a Hard Drive test component to it.

Oh cool thanks, didn't know maxtor had software diagnostic tools, never thought of that. I'll try that and get back to everyone. Nope had a look on HP's website they don't have any diagnostic tools, just drivers.

343830 2005-04-11 22:00:00 Check the HDD on your PC. If it works, then the IDE on the motherboard on the HP is probably stuffed. pctek (84)
343831 2005-04-11 22:06:00 Umm have any of these ide cables you've tried got a blue connection at one end by any chance??

The blue end HAS to be connected to the mobo ide connection. It'll NOT work, if u plug the blue end into the hdd connection.
