343634 2005-04-11 03:57:00 am setting up new home network for first time (well at least want to) - some questions floating round my head

1. where is a good resource for layouts etc ie hook phone line into adsl router (DSE Cheapie) hook router to switch, hook pc to switch etc kinda newbie blog

2. can anyone say anything good about the DSE HomePlug Adaptor's - partners pc in other room and looks like cheaper option than running wiring through roof/down walls - do you need an adaptor at each end (ie at the router/switch and at anitas pc)???? can they be plugged into a multi plug/board or do they need their own power socket???

cheers in advance
tmk

343635 2005-04-11 04:45:00 Welcome to PressF1.

You know what the connection layout is -- your question indicates that you have it right. ;) DSE's installation instructions are usually pretty clear, anyway.

You might find that wireless is cheaper than the HomePlug system.

You do need an adapter at each computer. They should work in multiplug boards (but some "surge suppressor" boards might be a problem if they have too much filtering).

343636 2005-04-11 05:25:00 go wifi, you should be able to set a 802.11b network from DSE for about $250.00 give or take a few dollars. wifi routers also double as a firewall!so there is a bonus straight away
my 2 cents!

343637 2005-04-11 10:55:00 As others have said I'd go wireless - cheaper wireless routers and cards are pretty comparable to the DSE electrical outlet setup.

I myself just run the ethernet cables down the hallway (I like a real fast network to transfer files between PCs in my LAN) ;)

343638 2005-04-12 02:21:00 cheers guys, wifi, a little expensive as the missus's brick is an oldie intel 400mhz i think, "but it does everything i want it to!!!" - she a technophobe, me a tutu-er - so didn't think i could justify the capital out lay, looked at the phone line option as Dick Smith had some on special / clearout @ 27 bucks each

all she wants/needs is internet/email access

don't want to be running lan cables down the hall where "the pugs" ARE going to chew em, thinking bout running a cable over/thru the roof (2 story house so under the floor isnt really an option and if i go lifting the carpet i will be "terry with an i" (ie, castration) if i can run it down thru wall using existing phone cable and a piece of string and sum gaffer tape to good effect? and hopefully sort out a LAN socket without it looking too bodgie (where to buy flush mount sockets??? price???)

+ any tidbits on wiring in a new phone line???? do you/should you run from an existing socket back to a new socket or can you "splice" into the phone line??? how does this effect ADSL on the line???

cheers

343639 2005-04-12 03:35:00 Dick Smith Electronics will give you a pamphlet showing the installation of phone sockets .

ADSL is taken off the incoming line as early as possible, and further "phone" sockets after a "splitter" won't have much effect .

If the other computer is in an adjoining room, a neat solution is just a pair of surface mounting (or flush) RJ45 jacks on opposite sides of the wall . (Unfortunately these are fairly expensive --- the cheapest I've seen is at demolition salvage places) . Then use long-enough patch cables to the computers inside each room .

Don't try to use "existing phone wire" for LAN cable . You must use proper CAT 5 or CAT 6 cable for Ethernet .

If DSE have tghe powerline adapters cheap, they would probably be quite OK . It's just that it's not a "standard" system . At the full price, I think most of us would go with the standard networking .

343640 2005-04-12 03:46:00 cheers graham, concur, am gonna keep it simple stupid, softly softly i think, sooner go with known technology than be left trying to sell dse stuff on trademe :) router, hub and file server (pc) in closet so can keep it out of view easily enuff, just gotta try and locate first telephone line into house i guess, or might just bite the bullet and reroute the one out of the office to the closet then run new one to office along with some cat 5 or 6 to a wall socket lan connection?????

sounds good on paper, just gotta put the plan into action :@@:

thanks to all who have posted and helped, cheers muchly
