343602 2005-04-11 02:55:00 Hi

My dad bought me a harddrive. An Ide one.I have a USb case.I just slot the harddrive into the ide to usb adaptor.Close the case and plug it into my usb port on my computer.

I did that. The light comes on but the computer isn't detecting anything.I tried it on a windows 98se and a windows xp computer. The harddrive shows no response although the blue led light is on.I shove the old harddrve which is the one I dropped. The computer detected it but it can't read it.

Why isn't my new drive detecting?

343603 2005-04-11 02:58:00 Is it USB2? The case? Have u got USB2 onboard??

If the hdd is new, and youre using XP go to control panel / admin tools / computer management / disk management.

See if the hdd appears here. If it does, highlight then format it.

343605 2005-04-11 03:13:00 OK and what are you using?

Windows XP?? And if so, is SP1 or 2 installed??

And do other USB devices work (if u have any), if u plug them in??

And is USB enabled in the BIOS? Have u got USB 1 . 1 or 2? onboard or PCI card?

343607 2005-04-11 04:12:00 OK. Umm whats it say in device manager for the hdd? Any errors?

98 SE supports USB 2, BUT 98 and under don't.

Are you trying to connect the hdd thru a USB hub or thru the USB port??

And I take it, the hdd goes by power. The power is connected to it right?

343608 2005-04-11 04:26:00 Some of em have issues if the drive isn't set to Master, Cable select especially will throw a spanner in the works. Metla (12)

Is the hard drive jumpers set to master? It needs to be. Can you feel it powering up at all when you plug it in? You have connected a power cable to the HDD didn't you? If its a 3.5" or 5.25" enclosure it needs power.I'd connect the HDD direct to your PC first via IDE. Check its picked up ok by the BIOS and therefore working, then format it and out it back in the enclosure then try it again.

343610 2005-04-11 06:32:00 98se supports usb2.0 not 98 .

Yes.I plug the harddrive to the usb 2 ports.Theres two ports required for the harddrive. One for power. The other for data transfer.

I heard my dad its a notebook external hard drive. So its a 3.5 inch??..

Where is the jumper located?

There shouldn't be anything wrong with the bios as it detects my old broken external harddrive.Same brand too and same size.Fujitsu 10gb hard drive
