343664 2005-04-13 00:16:00 I installed the Windows Antispyware program yesterday(Tuesday) It didn't detect any dial up programs. I have checked the things mentioned in the other posts the only thing that wasn't set as default was 'checking for publishers revocation certificate' this is now unchecked. This morning I have booted up to do some paperwork. I clicked on the My Documents folder on the desktop and the next thing my modem starts to dial up. What's going on? :@@: hogsnort (7858)
343665 2005-04-13 00:32:00 In Win XP theres also something called autodial . Heres how to find it . . .

Open Network Connections (Start>Network connections) .
On the Advanced menu, click Dial-up Preferences .
On the Autodial tab, select the check box next to the location where you want to enable autodial, and then click OK .

Go to ControlPanel/Networking connections
Look at the menu Advanced/Dial Up Preferences .
Uncheck "Enable Autodial from Location"

If this does not fix it suspect a program is trying to dial to update .
Zonealarm is known to do this as well as Windows updates - check the settings for these . It is not likely to be a rogue dialer if your normal dialup connection is doing the dialing .

As a last resort you can always stop it by Tools - Internet options - connections tab of Internet Explorer .
Set it to Never dial a connection .
When you want to dial use a shortcut for your dialup connection or go to Start/Connect to/Your Dialup connection name .

343667 2005-04-13 00:34:00 Are you on a network?

And are you using the main PC for access to the net??

Are there any other computers there on the network? (If you have computers networked to the main PC)?

If so, check your dialup / properties / advanced / Internet Connection Sharing . (If your ADSL has this, I dont know) .

The 2nd and 3rd option arent ticked are they??

(Establish a dialup connection whenever a computer on my network attempts to access the internet), and the option under this .

Having this option ticked, if someone tries to access the net, (from a networked PC), it will dial out thru the main modem (yours) .

Even if the networked computers have no modem/s .

343668 2005-04-14 00:48:00 I have one other computer networked to the dial up computer but it isn't set up to share the connection. Yesterday I unticked all zonealarm permissions to see if that stopped it from happening. This morning after boot up dial up started again. I've now unticked all but a few options in msconfig/startup which I should have done earlier. Toes crossed. hogsnort (7858)
343669 2005-04-17 11:32:00 I've had the same problem since I reinstalled Zone Alarm on the second computer on a network . Using msconfig I've narrowed it down to two Zone Alarm executables .

If I have Zone Alarm set to load on startup it immediately dials up . If I don't have it loading on startup but then start it later again it immediately dials up .

I can't find any setting in Zone Alarm that would do this . Updates is set to "manually"

You may have to completely uninstall zone alarm and reinstall to fix that problem .
If you don't want to do that just select "Never Dial a Connection" in IE Tools/Internet Options/Connections - that will stop it .
