| 343699 | 2005-04-11 08:46:00 | got my ADSL set up today. have every thing running just the way i want. my question is what is the dB numbers mean in the router setup? I see from the help info it is all about signal strength and power. what is a normal number to have? what is very high? what is very low? Downstream Upstream Attenuation 18.0dB 19.0dB Connection rate 2560 Kbps 160 Kbps these numbers normal? my connection is running fine i just like to know what it is all about. |

| 343700 | 2005-04-11 09:48:00 | Attenuation is the amount of signal that is lost over a length of a cable. Copper cables will always have some attenuation at normal temperate ranges, this is a fact world wide, and this is the big limiting factor for providing ADSL. Attenuation on a perfectly made piece of copper cable with no joints in predictable, hence why distance is often quoted as the limit. People who have ADSL hardware connected to their line can often measure the attenuation. Roughly the limits are: 2Mbps, under 43dB attenuation, 1Mbps, under 60dB attenuation. As for your connection rate, depends which speed plan you chose. You can test your spped here: www.jetstreamgames.co.nz/speed. |

Yours are better than mine Downstream Upstream Attenuation 31.0dB 63.0dB Connection rate 3296 Kbps 320 Kbps We used to run a $2 shop 10 metre phone extension to the modem sitting next to the computer but recently switched it around on suggestion from someone. Now the modem is next to the phone jack in the other room and a network cable runs from it to this computer. Attenuation didnt seem to get any better though :/ I'd say yours are very good. |
