Background: Got a Segate 20g in an old comp which I want to use as a backup disc (old comp just sits and beeps...any explanation as to why would be appreciated) I know that there was a virus on the HD before it got the better of me and bought a new comp.

As the 10g is relatively new (not used) it seems a waste not to use it.

Question: If I put the 20g Segate into my new comp (relatively old now and in threat of becoming a boat anchor) will the virus "infect" my new comp or will AV be able sort things out before that happens ?

Question: New comp is running windows XP Home ... old HD has Win'95 ... wouldn't mind finding out what's on the drive before formatting, but how, or will, this affect my new comp? or will it just come up as drive ? and show Win'95 as a file/s ?

344728 2005-04-14 03:41:00 XP wont be able to read whats on the drive unless the partition is formatted with FAT32, so you could reformat the drive and then scan it in windows to see if it finds the virus. Overdrive_5000 (4950)
344729 2005-04-14 03:41:00 You could try adding the old hdd in as a slave. Connect it to the primary IDE connection on the new system. (You'll have to open the case).

And put primary slave in the BIOS to AUTO.

Altho not worth trying to copy programs that have already been installed to it (on the old hdd), to XP. It wont work. BUT if all u want are docs etc from the old hdd to XP, it shouldnt be a prob.

Well u could scan the old hdd once its hooked up, then copy the file/s u want to the new, then format the old hard drive.

Says who?

XP can read FAT32, AND NTFS. As long as the connected hdd can be detected.

344731 2005-04-14 03:46:00 I know I said 'XP wont be able to read whats on the drive unless the partition is formatted with FAT32' Overdrive_5000 (4950)
344732 2005-04-14 03:58:00 XP can read plain old vanilla FAT, which is as old a file system as 95 would have used. Metla (12)
344733 2005-04-14 04:01:00 All I really want to do is look at what's on the old drive and possibly retreive some .doc files ... old comp not working so can't use that.
Know that the old drive had a virus and always came up out of memory or similar and got that annoyed with it that I just gave up !
If I use it as primary ide ... wont this just come up as out of mem same as if it was in the old comp ?
Use as slave and try to read with XP ? ... wont the same thing happen or will it just read the drive as files ?

:dogeye: Gettin' tooo old for this !!

344734 2005-04-14 04:05:00 It will just sit there as static data, once you have it installed scan it with your anti-virus scanner then go grab your files to your hearts content.

The sidetrack into file formats is just clouding the issue and has no relivance.

344735 2005-04-14 04:08:00 I would just connect the old as previously posted and the first thing to do is scan the whole hdd.

Then XP should see whats on it as if u booted from the old hdd. Except since u didnt boot from the old hdd, dont try running programs from it.

Then copy what docs u want off the old hdd then format it.

344736 2005-04-14 04:20:00 Again . . . thanks for the help !

I'll try adding it as a slave, getting what I need and then format it .
Next question . . . if I ask XP to format the slave, will it automatically format it to fat32 so that it is compatible with XP ?
