344676 2005-04-13 13:24:00 Hi,
I am down to my last 5GB and really need to get a bigger hard drive.
I already know about RPM, cache, size.

I just want to know what the best is to buy, (and where to get the best deal), and how to go about getting the contents off the old drive on to the new one.
The HDD that I have at the moment is ATA.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

344678 2005-04-13 13:49:00 Most popular brand (and my personal choice) is the Seagate range . Just have a look at the Hard Drives page at Ascent Tech - . ascent . co . nz/mn-product-template . asp?cname=Hard+drives" target="_blank">www . ascent . co . nz
Look at the ones in the 120 GB to 200 GB range . The have the better 8MB cache .

Western Digital is a good brand to .

As for transfering your data to a new drive . You have many options here . The two most simple way probably are to set up your new HD, do a clean install Windows, then hook up your old drive as a slave and transfer the data over . There is also the option of backing up your data to removable media such as CDs or DVDs and copying it to the new drive from there .

344679 2005-04-13 20:09:00 hell NO why go thru all that carry-on...........just ghost your old drive onto the new one............that way you'll retain everything but gain some space...... drcspy (146)
344680 2005-04-13 21:03:00 As far as brands of harddrive are concerned... get Seagate (which I believe have a 5 year manufacturers warranty; but check with the shop you buy it from); or Western Digital.
Don't get a Maxtor (this is based on my own experience and a few other people I know), but we may have got some duds

Does ghost copy your MBR and MFT (boot sector) as well?

344681 2005-04-13 21:06:00 You can't assume that everyone has a copy of Ghost lying around. Seagate have a utility that transfers data from the old disk to the new. PaulD (232)

Good point.

And I also recommend Seagate (although never had a failure from any other brand)

Yes Seagates are great. And yes, they do have a 5 year waraanty.
But don't check with the shop - I have seen some shops only offer a 1 year warranty on thme which they shouldn't be doing. Its 5 years!

344684 2005-04-13 23:03:00 yep I often have a little chuckle at the fact that many retailers charge for the 'extra' 3 year warranty when a lot of parts carry a manufacturers warranty of three years............... cpu,motherboard,hdd............. drcspy (146)
344685 2005-04-15 11:59:00 Thanks people, I will probably go for a segate.
As for the formats I've heard that if you buy a SATA you will need special SATA plugs in your mother board.
Is their any way of finding out wether you have those plugs? The drive I have at the moment is ATA.

How does ghost work and what is the utility that comes with Seagate?
Or how can I set up a slave drive?
Just want the best and easest way of transfering the data.

Thanks
