344636 2005-04-14 22:55:00 Guys, I'm sorry but I'm going to have to remove these links . You'll note that other media are not providing links to this stuff and for good reason . Our own company was involved in legal action several years ago over an issue like this where one of our publications posted a link - not the actual info, just a link - to a site and was then taken to court over it by one of the parties involved in wanting that info not published . Legal precident to date in NZ is that putting a link to infomation is the same as publishing that info yourself .

And even though this is a public forum, again, we don't want to pay the legal bills to establish the precident here over who is actually publishing what when someone puts links on a site run by us .

I ask you to undertsand this and not publically post links to the disputed material on the forum .

Yup thats fair enough . But how about posting a link to the link or is that pretty much the same thing?

I suspect the NZ Army's legal team would view this as being the same thing, and frankly, I don't want to find out. After all, they know people with guns.

344639 2005-04-14 23:06:00 BM, I read the book a few years ago and it certainly makes one think .

Have you ever noticed that everytime there is a farm death - recent events being 2 kids in a car releasing a hand brake, 2 kids on motorbikes, a guy standing between truck and trailer - the paper instantly reports "x number of people killed in farm accidents in last year, this high number is unacceptable, OSH to investigate"?

My instant reaction is to remember the book and feel intense sympathy for the survivors . There they are in shock, blaming themselves and each other, going through the whole grief process, trying to find a meaning in it all - and the guys with clipboards are there presumably trying to find someone who is still alive to be held "accountable" .

According to the book the bridge had design faults and it collapsed at the time it did due to the Beekeeper ignoring the Berrymans' instructions to keep the weight of the vehicle down (make several trips instead of one) and to SLOW DOWN! Major maintenance and partial replacement was due to happen in a few months .

My daughter was in a car accident 18 months ago (still bears a few scars, can't walk long distances, walks like a duck on stairs but is otherwise alive and well) . The police response was quite interesting . They apologised that they were unable to bring the offending driver to court to punish her and bring closure for my daughter .

I pointed out that the offending driver (who wasn't wearing a seat belt and, on a country road, had crossed the centre line on a blind corner at high speed) had actually punished herself far more than the Courts would all by her self (head injuries, in care for life) . I was left with the feeling that the police thought this wasn't quite enough .

Actually, in this case (not publishing links) it's the justice system/lawyers - the results the same regardless of who the government is. It's that whole crazy scenario where local news outlets aren't allowed to publish info that's been legally suppressed - documents, defendants names etc - BUT no such restriction applies to overseas news outlets, so full details can often be found with a simple Google search. Such are the strange things that happen when law struggles to catch up with technology.

344641 2005-04-14 23:18:00 Bugger that. If I was more interested in the issue I'd post the link on every single one of my websites! :p Greg (193)
344642 2005-04-14 23:25:00 I have been contemplating doing much the same thing, Though it apears I don't have the nads to do so.

I doubt going home and informing Mrs Metla we had lost the house and had to move into a cardboard box on the side of the road because I published a link to a webpage, and the machine had crushed us would go down very well (my god, whose more dangerous, The Govenment,or Mrs Metla)......

For whatever reason the Government has been playing hardball on this case since day one.

344643 2005-04-14 23:55:00 What’s this? Rambo scared of the New Zealand Army? Now there’s a laugh for the end of the week. :D:

Isn’t it amazing, that I can find how to build a nuclear bomb on the Internet, but the specifications to a collapsed army bridge in the New Zealand boo aye are top secret?

Sure makes one wonder???
