I have a TV Excel TV tuner card at the moment. It hasn't worked very well since I have had it and I don't find it very functional. To capture sound it outputs it to a 3.5mm audio jack and then expects you to jack it back into an input on your sound card! Which probably introduces extra unneccessary noise. So I was interested in purchasing something better. I was thinking an external unit with remote, USB2.0 aswell as auxilliary AV outputs would be good. But if someone knows of a good PCI card that would be good too. I am looking for a good user interface and the ability to encode video to at least MPEG2 (as when I try to record at the moment a few seconds is using crazy amounts of storage). Your opinions would be appreciated.

344770 2005-04-14 11:08:00 Hi there.
As your found out certain tv cards dont seem to work with some computer setups. Have a read at these two site for some very good reviews and advice.
www.tv-cards.com
www.videohelp.com

Sorry still dont know how to hyperlink. I read thru both of those sites before settling on the card i wanted.
Goodluck with yours. Theres a big selection out there. Make sure you read the reviews cause the people that wrote them have tried them and know off any bugs and quite offen have a solution to some of the probs you may experience and with the support you get from some manufacteurs, theirs, the reviewers, will be alot better and more helpfull..

344771 2005-04-14 11:20:00 Nearly all TV cards require a seperate line to feed to audio into the sound card, its not detramental to performance.

What does efffect it though is a sub-standard audio chipset/card (though modern intergrated audio is fine) a badly defragmented harddrive, too many programs running in teh background, poor signal.

The TV excel cards (otherwise known as pro-link) don't have the worlds greatest interface but generally work just fine, and you can choose which codecs to use (audio and video) and at what quality....So you already have the ability to alter the file size.
