344405 2005-04-13 08:36:00 Apple Computer has announced that the latest major update of its Mac OS X operating system, code-named Tiger, will be available on 29 April. Modestly described as "The World's Most Advanced Operating System," Apple's highly anticipated update to Mac OS X (now at version 10.4) will be available to mobs of grasping Mac huggers on Friday, 29 April. With over 200 new features on offer...

Read all about it folks: Here (digital-lifestyles.info)

BTW, let's not turn this into a 'Mac trash' thread. Keep it civil - thanks.

344406 2005-04-13 09:31:00 There is still lots of OS 9 machines around where I work, they can only pray for Tiger. I wonder if it will run okay on older iMacs.

I'm not too sold on these extra features that keep coming out with OS X - I've yet to see anyone using them (e.g. expose). Lets hope it doesn't break existing hardware support.

Personally I'd like to see a focus on eliminating instances of the "spinning wheel (or beachball) problem" and speeding up installs.

It also annoys me how Apple start only updating Safari (apart from security fixes) for their latest OS X version.

I don't think it pays to use the latest Apple OS until they bring out a few updates - some bugs that show up are too annoying :2cents: Apple do tend to gloss over the problems (i.e. too much marketing).

344407 2005-04-13 09:41:00 Off to the Apple Store ASAP here.
OSX 3 panther has been great, love Exposé and all the rest of the OS too. Now to give OSX 4 Tiger a run. :D

OSX has been out for over 4 years now, anyone still using OS9 don't know what they are missing. OSX 1 Cheetah was released 24th March 2001.

In the natural course of events this thread will either stay on top by the sheer volume of views or it won't.
By the way I'm thrilled to bits for you about your new os. I hope you find it rewarding and productive. :)

I use Expose continuously. It is definitely the quickest method to get between windows when you have 10 or more open.

What hardware are you running Mac OS X on? I very rarely see the spinning beachball now. With versions prior to Mac OS X 10.2 the system used to hang every so often, but with 10.3, even on my now quite old iMac G4 (800MHz), I hardly ever see it. :)

I'll definitely be upgrading to 10.4 next month. Dashboard looks like a bit of a waste of time to me, but Automator, Safari RSS and Spotlight are going to be killer features.

344413 2005-04-25 08:03:00 Well I think i'll skip it, I have a feeling it won't run on the old trusty LC575, but if someone wants to donate me a system to run it  , I could always force myself to use it at great personal risk Morgenmuffel (187)

Well at work there is a wide range of macs from your old 7200 (!) to dual processor G5 . Lots of G4 400s are using OS X - not the fastest at times .
Most problems are related to programs using the network .

A G5 installing 10 . 3 goes quite well . Even the mini macs didn't seem too bad .

I guess 10 . 4 will make an appearance sometime, with any new purchases .
We don't tend to bother installing upgrades e . g 10 . 2 to 10 . 3 unless it was has a site-wide license as most people don't really notice (or request it) .
