345381 2005-04-15 13:53:00 Hi, I've had a good search on the net & haven't yet solved my prob.
I have a dual-boot of W98SE & XP Pro which has been good for 2 years.
My prob is I booted into W98 for the 1st time in 2 weeks. My CD drives aren't showing up in My Comp or Device Manager. I checked D.Manager & there are exclamation marks next to the Primary & Secondary IDE Controllers. D.Manager suggested to update the drivers. As I couldn't access a cd drive I had to copy my Mobo drivers from within my XP install into my W98 partition, so I could run the setup from within W98. After installing the "VIA Chipset drivers" section of my MSI mobo cd, W98 rebooted & started installing the drivers. When it was complete, the prob was not fixed. I down/ld the latest hyperion 4 in 1 drivers & installed them, still no good. I also got told to boot W98 in to Safe mode & remove the IDE Controllers & reboot into Windows, but my pc will only boot into Safe mode for my XP installation.
I have also restored my W98 registry from msdos mode successfully but this didn't fix it. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated as I don't want to re-install W98 as that changes the boot partition & means I will also have to re-install XP!!

You should have got the IDE controllers straight off the Win98 CD anyway, not the MB cd.

345383 2005-04-15 21:12:00 There is sometimes a ide patch on the mother board cd for any os, I think thats whats they are talking about.
Do a forum search for failed cdrom, I believe this issue came up about 3 months ago and a fix was given somthing to do with low level drivers

345384 2005-04-15 21:15:00 Take a look in the registry by
run -> regedit

find HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VxD\IOS

If there is a name there called NoIDE, delete it.
This will force windows to try to reinitialize the
protected mode drivers when you reboot.
